ExtremeTech benchmarks Oblivion

I stopped reading after this:
"HDR is incompatible with AA on Nvidia graphics cards, we don't enable AA or AF in any of our tests"

yeah that's ignoring an ATI feature. Seems like it was left out since its a TWIMTBP title -_-

lol extremetech left out te x1900XT!

Obviously its a steal @ ~$450

Not only that but ignoring AF. Basically using Pure speed tests to show a more even match than what really is.

Or they simply kept it even ground? *shrugs*

Yeah, sucks that you can't enable that on nVIDIA cards, but that doesn't make the review not worthy to read, but to each his/her own.

They should have said that Nvidia can't handle HDR+AA BUT That ATI is fully able to. Also, I would have linked to the chuck patch. I would have used it anyway since it provides much better performance.

Now nvidia can't do AF either?

Oh, I didn't notice they didnt use AF! :Q

I personally perfer image quality over FPS for this game. I use 1280x960 HDR, 4xAA 16xAF All option on high except for the bugged self shadow. All kinds of mods that increase visual quality. I get about >25 fps outside in the most intensive situations and get ~95% >60 fps indoors.

Same. This game is visually stunning and should be played as such. The FPS drop outdoors is fine since the action happens indoors where the FPS is plenty hight. 20-25fps for outdoors is fine for me and coming from a First Person Shooter only genre, I'm qutie sensitive to slowdowns due to lack of FPS and I have not experienced such. Then again, I don't have tdt on and stare at my FPS counter but I do end up staring at the scenery often 🙁

heh.. how can they use the title "pitting ati against nvidia", then simply exlude the featrues which are the very strenghts of ati? doesn't make any sense to me...

They also exclude features that both ATI and nVidia can do (AF)

I'm confused... I thought you couldn't use HDR & AA in Oblivion period? 😕

Read the paragraph after that line........

Wow. Pretty lame IMO. They even mention the "Chuck" patch but than stated that since they weren't going to use AA or AF than it didn't matter. They also state that the patch doesn't improve performance on the single cards yet many users have reported a nice increase using only one X1900XT(X). 😕 Would have been a much better review had they used the "Chuck" patch and some AA/AF settings.

Oh sweet! I haven't been playing Oblivion because I reloaded (and had to start from scratch) and I've been waiting on my Oblivion guide to arrive. It's here now so tonight I'll be starting over with this new patch. Thanks guys! 😀

yea, all you babies complaining about them not using an ati feature to compare them?

well, hdr + aa, what will u compare that to ? just hdr? just aa? nvidia would win out that way

you guys forget how sm3.0 was not used many times to compare x800/x850 to 6*00 series since they couldnt do them

Maybe the editors wear really thick glasses and AF gets filtered out by the lense thus making it useless for them?

Well I don't want to make a big deal out of this, but it seems that they used settings that "favor" Nvidia.. Without AF and AA tests (purespeed that is, Nvidia of course has an advantage).. They could have used some tests with bloom+AA+AF..
On the other hand why would they use AA+HDR when the competitor hasn't got this feature?.. What sort of comparison would that be?
Anyway after seeing the great benchmarks in FiringSquad these look like a joke to me.. Poor job, certainly not a characteristic of Extremetech which have done some nice benchmarks in the past..
