Extremely slow wifi using Cisco Valet M10!!!

Not really, but they do degrade over time, especially if exposed to the elements. I would recommend replacing the outside splitter (~$5 @ HD/Lowes) and see if that helps.

Otherwise, try using OpenVPN and VPNBook to make sure you aren't being throttled by your ISP.

I'm talking about 6mbps to zero, most of the time being zero. Average, maybe 0.5 mbps. This is the cycle: 28 seconds of no internet connection whatsoever, then 2 seconds of sudden internet speed at 6mbps, then goes to 28 seconds of no speed again, cycle repeats.

I highly doubt that my ISP is throttling my speed. I had them check remotely on the connectivity of my internet and they said it's fine. So I suspect it's the stupid router.

You live in a townhouse, I guarantee there are interferences :biggrin:
 
Not trying to be a jerk, but I didn't know you could get cable internet that was that slow. I get more than that off my cell phone. Which of their plans are you on? I see they've got 5/15/30/55 in most areas. If you're paying for anything above 5 and you're only getting 6, I'd complain to them.

But, I think you may be over estimating how much bandwidth you have. 6mbps is almost nothing these days. I use 12mbps or more from Steam and Battle.net downloads. A single Netflix stream hovers around 5mbps. Meaning both of those will use 100% of your available bandwidth. That's only one user. Have a roommate/family/etc, yeah, just multiply that by the number of people. Guess what happens when a connection is overutilized? It runs like crap, in which case you have 3 options.

1) Get a faster connection.
2) Use less data.
3) Setup QoS on your router.

The router is easy enough to rule out. Plug your computer directly into the modem.
 
Although I don't recommend this, but you can hook up the PC directly to the modem like what XavierMace said, be sure load public profile on the connection and turn on firewall/anti-virus, test it for the shortest time to make sure it's not Cisco router's problem.
 
If you don't connect directly to the modem to test, then there is nothing else anyone can do to help. You need to help us to help you.

6mbps is not too bad.... thanks for the detailed comment but I know what speed I'm getting and I had the pleasure of testing it out at two different places, where at the townhosue is expericing slowdowns where my condo isn't.

Wired connection is fine I believe, at least I was not experiencing any slowdowns but I might have been lucky.

I already did. I test out using speedtest.net and it's normal.

As soon as I reset everything and reconfigure, use wifi and speedtest.net is normal.

The speed seems to be NORMAL at most times. The only time it's slow is when I'm at heavy usage (i.e. download, streaming). If it's just as simple as loading a website, it's somewhat manageable.

And I would imagine there would be even more at a condominium. When I test it (actually, I live in the condo, been her 3 years) at the condo, there is ZERO interruption (with the exception of power outage obviously).

I already did. Hooked it up to the modem DIRECTLY and tested the speed.

The speed reduces down to what I'm experiencing now, as soon as I start using it heavily.

And no, 6MBPS is not THAT bad of a speed like someone above kind of alluded to?!. I can get by streaming all videos on YouTube.
