Extra $343 to go First Class to Hawaii--worth it?

Scouzer

It's an extra $343 for us to go first class to Hawaii one way (already bought the return ticket in coach) to Hawaii. Since we live rurally it's a 12 hour 30 minute total travel time with 2 connections.

So it's $425 coach or $768 first class each. Worth it? It's our honeymoon so I am leaning yes.

Our first leg would be coach regardless (1 hour), then second leg would be business (1 hour), and third leg would be first class (6 hours).

Sounds like you've already made up your mind.

Normally I'd say no but 1) long flight and 2) honeymoon, you have my blessing.

I think it's something you have to try at least once. We also flew one of the directions for our honeymoon in first class. Definitely a way better experience than coach. If the extra cash doesn't mean much to you, I say go for it.

$343ea is MORE than worth it for the comfort. It's $700 total, forget a video card and a few coffees and it's covered.

Additional info: I have made 100+ flights over 10 hours, I have had my luggage lost 4 or 5 times, always in coach. The priority tags seem to work, in my experience. Anecdotal, obviously.

that's pretty decent first. is it true international first or is it a domestic first?

It's Air Canada so we have a 26 to 1 chance it's true international first. They have 1 legacy 767 they occasionally run on this route in which case we'd get shit first class on an old ass plane. Otherwise they have the cool personal pod things.

Downside is it's not terribly romantic--the pods are pretty isolated from each other. I'm not sure how easy it'd even be to talk to each other across an aisle.

Your knees in your chest and just enough room to spill your red wine in your SO's crotch is also not that romantic. 😉

You should do it. Enjoy the initial comfort, luxury, and pampering on the way there. Then on the return trip get used to the confinement, aggravation, lack of space, and loss of any special treatment.

It's a perfect reflection of married life.

I said yes first, but that's just 1 way?

Just suck it up and splurge that $350 at Hawaii, much better.

Not if you are already on coach for the trip home.

After flying there first class, you would dread the trip home in coach.

I think I'm going to dread the trip home in coach no matter what 😉

To clarify, it's $343 extra each... so $700.

Hell no. Spend it on a fancy dinner or another night at the hotel or an iPad or something.

I'd rather spend the extra $700 on another pair of flights somewhere else down the line. But...I'm not a rich ATOT'er. 😉

I can understand that sentiment completely, having flown at weird times just to save a few $$. But in the OP's case, if not splurging for the honeymoon, which should be a once-in-a-lifetime event, then when would be a more appropriate time?

I agree that first is just wasteful in most instances, but for a honeymoon? First both ways, without question.

Yes please visit hawaii. If its your honeymoon, I wouldnt want it to be in coach. Make it a memorable expierence. Its not that much, but please do it both ways. The weather here, is quite gloomy, and rainy. Not as much sunshine as last week. But hey, its hawaii, its paradise.

My gut reaction would be to tell you to spend the money on yourselves in Hawaii. Having said that, the longest flight i have been on was about 3.5 hours in economy, i would cry thinking about spending a 6 hour stretch in a single day there. Depending on when you land your first day may be down the shitter while you wait for you headache and sore knees/hips/neck to go away. That plus you always get to sit next to someone who wants you to make small talk and keep them busy while you are in the air. I somehow always wind up getting the window seat on those 4 seat to a row planes every connection flight i get put on, and its either slide forward in your seat and kill your back while you slouch, or lean over and rest your head on the next person's shoulder.
