I just bought a laptop and wanted advice if buying an extended warranty is a good idea.

I personally think it is.

Yes, even if you can repair it yourself parts will often cost as much if not more than the plan ESPECIALLY on laptops. Where did you get your lappy from?

Thats what i thought! Circuit City. 4yrs- $249.99

And if you face the same problem twice in a year, you get a new laptop free.

You don't necessarily get a "new" one free. You get a replacement that could be new or refurbished that may be an older model.

The same problem has to occur three times as well. On the third time, they will replace it.

Check the terms and conditions. It's a white brochure from GE/Zurich with a lot of fine print; not the purple one or the big purple/white sheet.

Have you looked into buying an extended warranty straight from the manufacturer?

right, a co-worker had bought an Acer laptop from CC and when the screen went bad, they replaced it with a same spec Compaq that was a reburb. So yes, you get a new laptop, but its not new... :)

I stick with the manufacture's warranty because I usually sell my stuff off within a year to avoid having obsolete hardware. If whatever I'm using breaks down after a 90 day warranty then I'm SOL

If you bought the laptop using your credit card, check to see if your card has benefits like extended warranties. I just bought a Sony DVD player using my Mastercard and it doubled the warranty to another year (they usually double the warranty up to a whole year). Better than the extra twenty J&R wanted for an extra year of coverage.

IMO, the extended warranty thingies don't add up.

The same operation who would fix it, and charge you are the ones offering the extended warranty to cover the cost.

So, let's think about this...........

Do you really, really, really, deep down believe the people offering this to you just like you so much they would push

to sell you what makes them the least money?

Perhaps, if you know from your own past experience, you are not able to use and maintain a product in a way which

allows it to reach it's expected lifetime the extended warranty is a good thing.

For myself, I let the mfgr. warranty take care of the infant failures and TLC take care of the long term.

(perhaps a risky strategy, but it has served me well so far)
