Extended through ??/??/200?: Q6600 Boxed version for $200 + tax: MicroCenter B&M and online.

If you're going to order the Abit IP35-E, I would order it ASAP. It doesn't stay in stock for very long, especially when there's a rebate.

Is the deal done? Does the $200 price conclude today? I can't seem to find E8400s anywhere: perhaps I should pick up the Q6600 whilst the price is this low.

On the other hand, when my friend visited the Paterson Micro Centre, he was told this price might last 'some weeks', long enough to clear out their inventory, I suppose. Of course this is the same Micro Centre that claimed he had to buy the chip in a bundle to get the $200 price, so you can take this with a pretty big lump of salt.

The Abit IP35-E rebate has been (re)posted on every major deals site. I probably should buy it sooner rather than later...

If anybody would pick one of these up for me, I'd pay $225 + shipping for it. I've got 10 HEAT under Extelleron.

Really sucks not having a Microcenter or Fry's near by; closest Microcenter is in Philadelphia, but 2hr roundtrip of gas will quickly negate any savings and it wouldn't be worth the hassle. Quite odd to see the best price on an item being in a retail store though, doesn't happen often.

Quick question, where do you look to determine the stepping for this? Is it engraved on the heat spreader or is it printed somewhere on the box itself?

On the side of the box....says S-SPEC: SLACR in upper right area on info panel flap of the retail box....the bolded and underlined part is what you're looking for in the G0 stepping

If you don't want to disrobe the boxed cpu, you can usually take a look at the product code sticker: it should read 'Q6600SLACR'.

I suppose I'll learn tomorrow whether I've waited too long. Ach, will there truly be no more E8400s (or any other Wolfdales) before May?

Edit: What she said, heh.

When I went in today they still had all the signs still up, so you could probably still get one for $199 still if your store is equally careless. I pointed it out to someone and after 30 min. of browsing, all the signs and the price on the chalkboard were still up.

Maybe at yours but others have reported that people at their local MC told them that it was on until the 17th (next Ad date). So I guess it's YMMV.

Well, I just received the newest print sales catalog in the snail mail from MC and according to it, the Q6600 sale price is $259.99. Sale dates listed are 3/3-3/16.

The email newsletter shows no date for the sale price of $199.99, so it's gonna be a YMMV thing.

Quick call to my local store revealed the $199.99 price still in effect but my sales guy (I always use the same guy due to their being on commission) told me it's going to change any day now as their "Internet pricematching" will be going back in effect on these.

I wouldn't wait if you want one and can find it ...

Assuming I could pick up an appropriate number, how much interest would there be in a $230-$245 shipped option? As of yesterday my local store had at least 20 in stock.

Check page 3 (or so) of the print catalog, in the online version it has the $199.99 price, it's on the left hand side of the page. Two prices in the same catalog. That's the online version, I'm curious if the print version is the same !

I was in the Houston Microcenter store last evening, Tuesday, March 4th, around 8:00 p.m. I picked up a Q6600, boxed, retail, SLACR, for the $199.99 price ($216.xx after sales tax).

Umm, did you read what I posted ? ie. snail mail catalog ? It's 40+ pages and does not list the price as $199.99 anymore, rather $259.99. In fact, it's on the front page on the bottom left corner where they advertise "Internet Pricing In-Store on CPUs".

If the listed price on their website is lower than the "catalog" price, they ALWAYS adjust the price to match their online price. All you have to do is ask.....MicroCenter doesn't use two separate websites, like other B&M stores seem to do.....or claim that their website is a separate entity from their B&M store, like another well known B&M/online store does (Fry's.)

Of course, you'd know this is the way it works if you'd ever actually been to a MC and tried it. (And since their website still shows the $199.99 price for the 8400, and it's irrelevant that it won't load into your cart, they don't check that....only that the price is listed as that on their website......your price would be $199.99)

HINT: The salesperson just calls up the website, verifies the online price, and the instore price is adjusted down. You'll always pay the lower of the two prices they have.....instore vs. online.

Oh, and Rambler.........you do know Hemingway did not say or write that "quotation," right?

While the public seems to agree that this is in fact a Hemingway quotation, scholars have some reservations and for good reason. Hemingway did not believe that bullfighting was a sport. For him it was a tragedy. See his October 20, 1923 article titled "Bullfighting A Tragedy" reprinted in By-Line: Ernest Hemingway Selected Articles and Dispatches of Four Decades edited by William White. Hemingway reiterates his beliefs regarding the tragedy of bullfighting in his 1932 book, Death in the Afternoon.

In July of 2006, Gerald Roush provided a possible source for the "three sports" quotation, citing a story titled "Blood Sport" by Ken Purdy, which originally appeared in the July 27, 1957 edition of the Saturday Evening Post.

The story is reprinted in Ken Purdy's Book of Automobiles (1972). Gerald provided a scan of where the quotation appeared and it reads as follows: " 'There are three sports,' she remembered Helmut Ovden saying. 'Bullfighting, motor racing, mountain climbing. All the rest are recreations.' " Gerald noted that the character of Helmut Ovden is modelled after Ernest Hemingway. This could explain why the quote has been so widely attributed to Hemingway over the years.

In May of 2007, Rocky Entriken wrote of another possible author of the "three sports" quotation:

"As I am told, the quote belongs to Barnaby Conrad, a writer of the same era as Hemingway and a San Francisco raconteur of some note. Mostly he did magazine articles but his books include The Death of Manolete. My source is Dan Gerber, yet another writer of the era."

Of course I did, otherwise I wouldn't have asked you to verify if page 3 of the printed catalog looked like page 3 of the online version. Isn't it abundantly obvious from my question that the online version of the catalog has 2 prices listed in it ?

The question is: Does page 3 have the Q6600 on it at all ? Does page 3 list the Q6600 for $199 ?

Picked up one in Santa Clara, CA yesterday. $199 still listed on display case, several in stock. Kid selling it said I would have to buy HSF, I told him the stock HSF would be fine for stock operation (for the time being). He tried a couple of more times to convince me I was wrong, I think he actually believed I would damage the chip using the stock HSF. When I wouldn't bite, he actually started asking intelligent questions, but by then I was irritated and anxious to move on. Afterwards, I felt kind of bad I didn't take a few moments and at least tell him where to look for real information.

Nano, don't feel bad--it's not your job to educate the employees of a store of which you're a customer. Sometimes I try to educate the MC staff, sometimes I just do my biz and leave, and sometimes the idiots are so forceful at trying to sell me something I don't need that it's all I can do to politely say "no, thanks" five times.

And now, for the real purpose of this post--KABOOM! Ginger drops a knowledge bomb on Midnight Ranger.
