Very interesting to read all the thud and blunder here, before any evidence showed up. Will be interesting if this turns out to be the result of a hardcore conservative, or perhaps an anti-muslim individual. Yes?

I would imagine the perpetrator had some sort of ideology that powered all this. Do you think that's relevent?
 
The island story is horrible.

Stuck with a gunman and no place to go but the water and a long ass swim to shore.

Can see why he was able to kill so many people.

I highly doubt ideology matters at this point.

You don't commit mass murder over zone rules or immigration laws. Anyone who does something on this scale has problems far beyond political beliefs.

Most likely we will learn that this guy had all kinds of other problems.

Though I agree, anyone who does something like this has serious problems. And Norway isn't even lacking in good mental health care, from what I recall....

I admit to being surprised by this because I have never heard that Norway had any home grown extremists. However, if it wasn't a Muslim extremist my next best guess would have been some sort of Christian fundie.

I watched CNN and they were speculating "MOOOOOOSLIM JIHADIST", even after it was released on the 'net that it was a blonde norwegian.

Not corporate media, but Michael Savage is running "Muslims bomb Norway" and "Norway's Quisling Moment" right now. Not surprising since he immediately blamed the VirginiaTech massacre on Muslims as well. Just looking at internet forums it's easy to see the prejudice that many people hold in such cases.

(Admittedly I was expecting a swarthy bearded dude as well.)

Ideology is incredibly important at this point. Just assuming that the guy had mental issues is sweeping the issue under the rug.

You can take anything from muslim radicals to abortion clinic bombers to Bader-Meinhof to modern nationalists and, in all cases, it's not a matter of mental illness but of political agenda. The truth of the matter is simply that all ideologies can be radicalized enough to trigger such acts. And that includes self-professed conservative Christians who (for some baffling reason) sometimes take their hatred of liberals to such ridiculous extremes as seems to have happened in Oslo.

But what bothers me the most isn't that this guy labels himself a conservative Christian. Anyone with the slightest bit of sense knows that this isn't typical behaviour. What does bother me is that the type of people who often complain about a lack of outcry from muslim communities over terrorist acts now seem to be refusing to address this act in exactly the same fashion.

And what genuinely scares me is that, just a week ago, I would have thought no more of this guy than the average liberal hating loon that I see almost daily on message boards and forums. Any ideology that allows enough hate to breed over its agenda will almost inevitably see a repeat of today's events.

It's not mentally ill people that are the problem; it's the otherwise-sane-but-still-completely-crazy people that are.

So you guys think all news organizations were speculating, or are pissed that they were reporting the speculations of others, like they do with EVERY CASE OF ANYTHING? Perhaps a statement similar to this: "officials are looking into the possibility of it being <insert name or group here>?"

Anyways, you guys seem to sound surprised that news will report the speculation of people that were there, or people in charge of investigations. When the majority of bombings in public areas occur by a specific subgroup of people, guess who will be on the suspect list?

NEWSFLASH: Newspapers report information provided to them by others, more at THE EXISTENCE OF THE FIRST REPORTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.

I didn't read any news stories at all that said the attacks were done by Muslims. I read Reuters and CNN. What did you read? Joe Schmoe's: This Is Not A Blog But News newspaper? I think the closed minded one is you, since you, apparently, interpret phrases like "reports are coming in," "officials are," "many have asked," or "authorities are" when talking about something as "we at <the news orginization> have proven the culprit is <the most likely fucking suspect(s) currently being looked at> without any proof because we exist to state facts we create without evidence, and do not merely relay information provided to us by others (with the exception of investigative reporting)."
