well since you didnt use your real name and addy, why can't people just get it from the domain name you registered?

The reason I didn't use my real name and address was so I could avoid any possible hidden charges from 1&1. Doing a whois on my domain has nothing to do with that.

I just don't trust giving them my cell number. Not that they are plotting to scam me, rather I'm sure they would put me on a telemarketting list. I definately don't want that on my cell. I have a payphone downstairs from my apartment and when I just tried to call it I got, "This number is not avialable for incoming calls".

I'll try another payphone instead.

I loved 1&1, then someone linked directly to 2 of my files without my permission and sent my bandwidth usage through the roof then they bump my monthly premium up from ?5 to ?270......and they won't help me out....so I am cancelling and fighting them on the payment.

Make sure you set the money spent to $1.00 to be on the safe side

Where is this setting? I didn't give them any credit card information, so how can they charge me? I'd rather they just block further access than have to spend money for extra bandwidth! I'd hate to have to pay big bucks because I got slashdotted (not that I expec tit to happen any time soon:D)

Set the setting anyway... its called being responsible. I for one did use my real name and addy so when they shut everyone elses sites down due to bogus info, i get more bandwith :)... Anyway, the point of my post is to help everyone set a few settings as to not get themselves in trouble

1. Definately set your "Cost Limit" to $1.00 (Which is under My Account, Billing Overview), which will kill service to your page in case your bandwith usage goes thru the roof for some reason. Then you dont even have to think about fighting with anyone about all these charges you ran up. They're gonna have to pay for the bandwith sooner or later, and you bitching about it wont pay the bills. Its called being nice, some people should try it

2. If you are worried about them selling your phone number to people, change it once you get your account set up. Its easy to do.

Just trying to be helpful. Now, time for me to register a domain name :)

Can someone give me a quick rundown of how to use PHPNuke with 1&1? I'm not quite sure where to begin. I've read the installation instructions and I'm still pretty confused. Especially concerning permissions and database setup.

You guys are too paranoid. This is a reputable company, but not located in the United States. I am a subscriber to Business 2.0 and checked out the company after I saw the ad in the October issue. They're an European (German, IIRC) company with good engineers and a strong intrastructure. They might sell your number to telemarketers, but who doesn't? If you don't use your real name and address you give them a right to use a clause in the TOS to cancel your account. That would suck if your site got popular a few months later, but 1and1.com saw your account info wasn't correct and cancelled your account. :(

I figured out the permission. My domain was pointing toward a crappy temporary website that their crappy webeditor created for me. Once I set it back to the original domain I was OK.

Now my problem is that when I load up phpmyadmin and try to load the nuke.sql to import the tables into my database I get an error message telling me this: What gives?

Error

SQL-query :

--
------------------------------------------------------- --
--
--
CREATE TABLE confirm(

confirm_id char( 32 ) NOT NULL default '',
session_id char( 32 ) NOT NULL default '',
code char( 6 ) NOT NULL default '',
PRIMARY KEY ( session_id, confirm_id )
) TYPE = MYISAM

I don't know why the syntax would be wrong.

i got the same error dude. For some reason, myphpnuke gives that error. You have to use ssh. So, look your info for ssh in the control panel. There is a separte username and password for it. Also, make sure you have phpnuke directory in your webfolder. Then, use ssh to long into your site (if on windows use putty)

ssh -l <username> <domain name>

It will ask you for a passwd, so enter the passwd you got from the ssh section of the control panel.

next you should be at the unix prompt.

go to your control panel and get the mysql username, passwd, hostname, etc and do:

:~ >mysql --host=whatever --user=whatever --password=whatever databasename < path_to_nuke.sql

that should work. I had to to that because i kept getting an error with myphpadmin.

Thanks RossMAN. I have two accounts with RackShack domains setup and working flawlessly. I am debating another. A domain and hosting, with a reputable company, for three years, for less than $20? How can you beat that? The control panel is not the best, but it works. I hate the numerical ID, I will never remember that.

I made a typo in my external domain name and I don't see anywhere to edit or delete (then recreate) the domain listing. Help?

Thanks for the info. I followed your directions and in Putty at the unix prompt I get the following error:

ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'xxxxxxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxx.us.perfora.net' (Using password: YES)

I'm not sure whats up.

You don't need to use a numerical ID. It accepts your domain name (no difference whether you point to there dns server or you registered through them)

Thanks I figured it out from THis thread. Turns out the top few lines of the nuke.sql file are junk. You just have to delete the first few lines and it runs fine. I'll just keep going until I run into more problems.

cool, coomarlin. Now we know the reason for the error too. After installing phpnuke, you're pretty much done with the hard part. The rest is all reading, tons of it, so you know how to use phpnuke. Have fun! :)

Does anyone know how to edit/delete domains?

what do you mean? Is it a subdomain you're trying to delete?

i need a forum that is easy to setup, looks good and is free. any ideas?

Install phpNuke, you'll have easy forums+tons more.

How do I set up my www.tk account for this?

you mean a redirect?

How long did it take for you all to get your confirm e-mail (the one that sends you the call)? I signed up about an hour ago, still waiting. I figure it is probably the A.E. taking hold. I'm so impatient (especially considering I don't have to PAY)....

Does anyone know how to edit/delete domains?

what do you mean? Is it a subdomain you're trying to delete?

No, it's a domain. As I mentioned in my post above, I made a typo in entering my domain name and before I new it I had clicked ok and it's now listed under my domains on 1and1. I want to either edit the current, incorrrect listing or delete and create a correct one, but I don't see any options for removing domains (although I do see it for subdomains).

Also, this raises another question. I know it's n00b, but let's say that I have a domain whatever.com. I go to my registrar and point it to 1and1's servers, and set up my 1and1 account appropriately as well. What specifies that my account on 1and1 is where whatever.com forwards to? If all I've done is put in 1and1's server names with my registrar, what prevents someone else with a 1and1 account from stealing my domain name and having it forward to their 1and1 account instead?

Basically, is there any risk that I could inadvertently "steal" this typoed domain? There isn't, right?

That's an interesting question...but I would assume that if 1and1 already hosts the mistyped domains, they would not let you set up the same domain under your account or their own nameservers would get really confused when a request came in for that domain. If the original owner of the mistyped domain pointed it toward 1and1's nameservers before setting up their account on 1and1 (which would be pretty stupid), and you claimed the domain on 1and1 before he/she did, then you're right - you would get all the traffic for that domain.
