Thanks, I'll give this a shot.

I don't see how they could scam you just by knowing your phone number and calling it. If it was that easy people could just open up the phone book. It's not like you're calling them back.

So I bought a domain name from RackShack, Do I just have to enter those as the name servers?

Also for some reason when I try to do the "Transfer external DNS" thing I keep getting "Domain temporary not available" is this because I just bought the name last night?

Yes, you have to wait usually over 24 hours for the changes to take effect.

Info... to use an externally registered domain name...

click order domain name from the configuration and settings page
At DNS transfer click next
Enter your domain name/click next..
Create an External Domain Name by DNS Transfer/click next..
Choose Your Mail Servers/click on Order with current mail exchanger
next screen gives you the name servers

p.s. even though the button says order there is nothing to enter about payment so dont be afraid to click on it

I got this from FW.

I got my domain name from rackshack.net and I have set everything up now, so prerona.net is now up an kicking ass. (all i have to do now is worry about the content) :p

Thanks, so I just have to wait for the changes, enter the name servers at RackShack, and let 1and1 know by using there little DNS Wizard... cool.

this deal plus the free.tk domain name = one hot deal IMO.

Question: I uploaded several files via sftp to my account at 1and1.com and yet I have no idea where they are actually located. I want to be able to link to the files for downloading. can someone help? thanks

total noob questions..

ok so i set up an account with 1and1.. but i don't want that weird address dsafsdaffd.onlinehome.net or whatever, so i need to use rackshack to get my ownname.com right? is it a one-time $5 fee for that? or per year or what? also, what's the difference between rackshack and dot.tk?

thanks!
kevin

edit: PS: so, if i register a name thing with rackshack, i won't have to worry about 1and1 holding it hostage, or whatever the grievances were, right?

I want to be able to link to the files for downloading.
If you just uploaded without doing anything else, it should be in your / directory. For example, if you wanted a link to a file and had no domain, it would be, http://s98765432.onlinehome.us/file.zip. Your unique "s98765432...." sub-domain should be listed in the Domain Overview page.

so, if i register a name thing with rackshack, i won't have to worry about 1and1 holding it hostage, or whatever the grievances were, right?
Yup. If you want to be extra careful, most registrars nowadays have a "lock" feature. If you turn these on, they'll pretty much ignore any requests from other people to grab your domain.

BTW, that's great price on those rackshack domains...

noxxic, thats exactly what worked with every other host i've used in the past, but w/ 1and1, when i link the "http://s86977621.onlinehome.us/filename.txt", it keeps giving me the error 404: file not found msg. I contacted their superb customer service and i bet they'll give me a reply first thing monday morning. Thanks anyways!

wudood, you say my question is a total noob question, but yet you havent even figured out your domain configs. interesting

anyone know any good url/dns redirector services that are short/easy to remember that work well with this? (i tried da.ru but directories don't work)

http://www.tk

its free but gives you a pop up when you first load the page.

Actually

1. Log in your account
2. Scroll down to MY MARKETING
3. Choose your domain
4. Hit the radio button "No Pop Up"

Did any of you, who are using an external domain, actually get the option of using a non 1&1 mail exchange? I registered mine with Namecheap and 1&1 claims it could not find a MX so I had to use theirs. Does this mean my mail server addresses will be different?

Hmmm, this is so tempting.

So i would effectively only need to put 6 bucks on a credit card now, for the domain, and then "point" it to these guy's webserver?

The only domain i've registered before was done through a web host, so i didn't have to deal with nameservers, etc...total newbie to website design and hosting.

Is that really all there is to it?

Is anyone getting an "Unable to establish socket" error with the domain look-up on rackshack?

Yep, I get the same thing when I try to manage my domain, and when I tried to use thier chat support it says my username or password is wrong, so I figured I might have screwed up my password, so I click the "Forgot password" link, entered my email address (yes I'm sure it's the right one) and it says it has no record of my email address. This is funky, everything worked just fine last night and they've allready taken the money from my account for the name.

bcizzle: I just tried it on mine and it seems to work - zip and txt. Could it be that you have a ".htaccess" file in your / that is preventing your download?

wudood: if you meant your questions are total n00b questions, then my bad. i apologize. ignore my last post.

Noxxic: hmm i just checked my files in my directory via sftp and i dont have any type of .htaccess file of any kind. Just the files i uploaded, index.html, log folder, and the wsc##### folder. like i said, it's weird cuz its not making any sense why i cant access the files from IE.

anyone else having trouble loading up the page to login for www.tk? i get to the main page, and when i click "my .tk" it doesnt load. perhaps its too many Hot Deals people flooding the site!

This is an excellent deal, but 1&1 lacks one thing that I?m interested in for email: IMAP.

Is there anyway to upload software to use as my own personal IMAP server? I?ve researched and have found IMAP server software such as Courier, UW, and Cyrus, but have no clue of how to install after reading documentation for each.

Would it be possible to compile on a Windows based machine and upload to my 1&1 account? Any insight would be great.
