Hell. I just ordered. I added the 15" LCD for $80, let's see if they confirm the order. Somehow, the title "$466 + free shipping" is not even close to the total that went to my CC, after upgrading memory, HD and the LCD, and minus the $100 rebate :)

Well, at least I have a system to take me to 2004!

Try to sell the old stuff now.

IF you have an older Dell that does have a non standard PSU connection you can buy adapters to convert. For example go to centrix-intl.com and do a search for Dell. On the list you will see
Convert Dell motherboard power connector to standard 20pin power supply connector *Click on spec for picture*

Yes you can cancel your order but one of 3 scenario's are likely to happen:

Call Dell Customer Service ASAP! Remember to write down the date, time, name of the person you speak with, their extension and ask if they can provide you some sort of confirmation # that your order has been cancelled.

1) Your order gets cancelled, does not get shipped and the authorization hold on your cc gets released in 2-3 business days.
2) They transfer you to their "retention" department and try to convince you not to return your Dell by offering you a partial refund of $100-$200 this probably won't happen since you don't have the system with you and it hasn't been 30 days yet but it COULD happen.
3) You're SOL the system has already shipped and your cc has been charged.

thanks for the info rossman, that cleared things up. i was just browsing the forums at dell.com where the representatives actually go too and can make order changes etc. seemed like i can just post a message there and tell them to cancel it. but ill most likely call like you said, and im pretty sure they'll let me cancel it now that you've cleared things up. i know my order hasnt shipped because i ordered it two days ago and my order tracking information shows that the system i order hasnt even been built yet. actually, the building process hasnt even started, so this should be hassle free. then its 4550 here we come :)!!!

I would definitely call, do not post in the DellTalk forums because time is of the essence. Remember to keep the Dell CSR's contact info so just in case your cc gets charged and your system ships you documentation that your order SHOULD HAVE been cancelled.

I'll add you to the pile of knuckleheads that are spreading the wrong information then.

Dell 44xx and 45xx series are pin for pin compatible with industry standard power supplies.

I'm speaking from experience, not speculation.

If you are Dell DCSE, you will have VERY easy access to Dell white papers which clearly state that these power supplies are NOT ATX compliant.

I know it is misleading, but just because they use the same plugs do not mean they the pin configuration. If you are DCSE I suggest you go back and review the self-study materials very carefully - that's kind of scary the level of service you are providing customers if this is something that you don't know as I speculate that you are not very experienced.

i thought it was a 10% coupon? ebates has it.

btw, one more question, can i use my own DIMM of 256MB DDR266 memory IN conjunction with the DDR333 DIMM that dell will ship to me? i heard there is no problem doing this, because the DDR333 will just lower is running speed down the the 266 speed. no problem right? i dont want to have to go out and pick up some new PC2700 memory -_-....

Ok, update on power supplies. Yes, it is true that Dell uses proprietary power supplies and I have seen on several other forums that swapping with a standard OEM power supply WILL fry your system.

Um, quit talking out of your arse. I swapped out power supplies on a 4400 and 4500 and they're industry standard, nothing unique about them.

I dont know if this has changed but i put an enermax 431 Watt in a Dimension XPS 933mhz dell and it killed it (THE PSU not the board)

and yes the PSU was pin compatible with the motherboard that didnt stop it from frying it though

i dont know if they've changed since 2 years ago though

PC Power and Cooling makes Dell-compatible replacement power supplies rated at 275watt. Aztec is one of the primary power supply manufacturers for Dell.

Thanks for a great deal, Steve and everyone! My motherboard just fried, and I almost bought this system last night with a 19 inch monitor, but today's monitor deal saves me about $150.

Before I pull the trigger, I would appreciate some advice, since I last bought a computer in 1998, and things have rather changed since then.

First, is there a noticeable difference between a 2.4 and a 2.53 that would justify spending an extra $50 for the 2.53?

Second, is there a noticeable difference between the regular 15 inch FP monitor (E154FP) and the Ultra monitor (1504FP) that would make it worth the $70 difference? I play games occasionally, but not the online competitive games that seem to be so graphic intensive. I just want things to look nice and normal. Would I be better off getting the 19in M992 Flat CRT for $20 more than the base FP, since I have the room for it? I currently have a 17" monitor. I don't want things to seem tiny, but could live with things looking relatively similar to the monitor I have now. I looked at the FP technical stuff, but I don't know what a lot of it means or how to quantify the difference in how things will look.

Third, I was planning on adding memory later, because it seems that it would cost $150.00 to get the double memory. Am I missing something? Or is that not too good of a deal?

Finally, I am going to upgrade to the MX video card. Is there a reason I should spend the extra $70 and get the Ti instead?

Thanks for all of the advice.
