Yeah pretty much... did a quick go for it at 4.9GHz... beat my previous score, however I know this is slower than it could be since 2 of my 4 cores throttled, and I was up around 1.58v.

Hey, sub-22 is great stuff. And my time is not a moving target anymore (v13):

John, every time I run it I have to enable macros. Is this normal? I don't use Excel much on this PC. My network is still connected, does that matter. I see to disconnect it in the test notes.

I haven't used this with < 2013... but with mine it will only ask the first time, subsequent runs it won't ask unless I rename or move the file.

Preferences - Trust Center - Trust Center Settings

(with 2013 anyways) has options for the Macros and "Trusted Documents".

Excel Options - Trust Center - Trust Center Settings - Macro Settings, I always select Enable all macros (I've never had a malicious one). But I doubt it would affect runtime.

And I unplug my LAN cable from the router to avoid distractions from random traffic.

Alrighty.... I installed Office 2013 and it looks like that made a huge difference.. or maybe a fresh office install did? Clocked the 3570K up to 5Ghz and...

Also John, my score at 4.8Ghz is 22.10 . Not sure if you wanted that for the chart as well?

OMG well done! Great chip, well setup, it's been a journey.
Vectronic must be SO pissed.. !! V14:

Thanks John. I might be able to get 5.1 or 5.2Ghz? Not sure? Don't really want to try..

He shouldn't be. He was the one who told me to come over here and give her a run ;)

Nah I'm not pissed, just wanted someone to beat John with a 3570K :p

Our two 3570's seem to be running on par (minus your better cooling) so nothing to be mad about, if anything it just shows me what I can do with a bit more money spent on cooling. My $40 isn't doing THAT bad.

Cheers to that! Now John don't get any ideas about 5.6Ghz..... ;) I find it freaking amazing how your chip can do 5.5Ghz. That's awesome!

Amazed I haven't killed this thing yet... dunno how the hell I got 5.0GHz before.

Was all the way up to 1.720v... Excel would crash, followed by a WHEA... every time.

Think I'm gonna have to give up till I change cooling, could drop ambient by about another 16 degrees... don't think it's worth it...lol

I've got ideas about 5.6 but my chip's not sharing them. It'll idle at 5.6 (the board can change Ratio, BCLK and Vcore after booting) but won't take any load. I'm done.

Geez 1.720V!!

Maybe a 3770K could do better?

Nice :) LOL I'm sure someone has a higher clocked chip on water or Air in these forums to beat the high score. I'm sure this thread will be back up when Haswell comes out.

1.720 I would say is a little too high ;) One benchmark is not worth melting you chip...

The benchmark is more of an excuse, I just like taking all the "stay below X.xxxV" and ignoring them. I've probably knocked a few years off it's life, but I don't think it would die till about 1.85v.

Still reboots into my 4.5GHz without a problem, only has to do that for another few weeks or something till I get another one... then de-lid one, keep one stock.

So you are going to buy another 3570K? What is your current config?

ASRock Z77 Extreme4
3570K @ 4.5GHz (Zalman CNPS9900Max)
Patriot Viper 3 2x4GB, 1600 @ 2000
XFX 7750 Core/Ghost
XFX 750W Pro XXX

SSD, HDD, yadda yadda... not sure why you ask?...lol, yeah I could bump it up to a 3770, I might if they come down in price a bit, otherwise hyperthreading and mildly better overclocking isn't worth the $100.

Edit: preferable retailer: 3570K = $230, 3770K = $330.

No reason, was just curious. I got my 3570K for $189 on sale, not as cheap as MC on sale but still a good buy. I don't think the 3770K is worth it either for the price increase. At least from a gamers perspective. If you use programs that will utilize the HT then it would be obviously.

Nope, I do 3D rendering which loves more cores... however, "hyper-threading" generally has a negative impact... through-put is better than thread-put(?). IMHO hyper-threading is only useful on a single core CPU, where 2 threads makes a rather huge impact on multi-tasking. It was a stop-gap between P4 and Core.

I got my 3570K for $200, but that was as a bundle with the Z77 Ext4... don't need another motherboard yet and that's pretty much the only bundle-deals you get other than CPU coolers, better air cooler isn't enough gain, AIO liquids that I want are hard if not impossible to find, so that will be custom when I get around to it. Not sure if I want to wait for Haswell.

I was going to buy a Haswell desktop setup, but I think I will skip in my desktop and buy a Haswell Laptop when they become available. I am more interested in the power savings vs. the expected 10-15% increase in IPC. As of now, the 3570K rips through anything I feed it.

I just re-ran the benchmark on my dual Xeon system and set Excel to use 4 threads only and set the affinity to match so that it would Turbo up to 2.80GHz (the max) and this was the result:

2 x 2.0GHz Xeon E5-2650 - 48.01 ± 0.19 s
Core - Sandy Bridge - EP
Turbo - 2.80GHz
# Cores - 16 (8 Per Chip)
# Threads - 32 (16 Per Chip)
L2 Cache - 16x256KB (8x256KB Per Chip)
L3 Cache - 40MB (20MB Per Chip)
Bus - 2x4000MHz QPI
RAM - 32GB PC3-12800 ECC QC
HD - 2x64GB SSD in RAID0
GPU - Quadro 600 1GB
OS - 7 x64
Office - 2010 x64

Now, that is more like it!

Decided to chart CPU performance in this bench with clock speed isolated.

Excel-_Speedtest-v1-feb-2013_CPU-_PERFORMANCEv01_zp.png

24000 is the number that sets the performance of my FX-8350 at 4.0GHz and 60 seconds to 100. Waiting for Haswell....

Nice graph John! looks like the guy above "Imported_Powerhouse" got a sweet score - You may want to update the charts OR get him to send a screen shot it..?

Did he?... I see 48 seconds, it's a nice system, but... for Office Excel?... it fails. But go ahead, spend $3,000.
