ex won't pay back money he owes me

Two years ago, I went out with this guy and let him borrowed 2 grand to pay off his car payments (he was missing 4 months worth of car payments). At that time, I trusted him and didn't think he would screw me over.

3 months later, we broke up and was still in good term, so I told him to pay me back when he has the chance. Then a month after that, we engaged in a bit of drama so i cut off communication with him, but told him that he still needs to pay me back.

Now, I've been emailing him and telling him that he needs to pay me the 2 grand. Actually, I told him 1,500 would be fine since 500 was a gift to him for xmas. But the bastard never answered my emails! Now I am fed up with waiting and want to take him to small claim courts.

It is not about the money I care about -- it's the principle. I don't want him to think that he could borrow money and not return it. The only evidence I have in court is his car payment paper which I paid via my checking account. Other than that, I don't have any contract staying he owes me any money. I know this will come down to a he say she say kind of thing. So if any of you have experiences in this area, can you tell me what is the likelihood of me winning? thanks!

cliffnotes for the lazies:
- let bf borrowed 2 grand. we broke up. he wont pay.
- contacted him numerous of times via email (cause he changed his number) but he won't answer.
- now threatened to take him to small claim court and want to know what is the likelihood of me winning.

Since it's not in writing, you are more than likely screwed. Unfortunately, this will probably end up being an expensive lesson for you

Seems that unless you have documentation where he admits owing money (email?), it's going to be pretty tough to win in court.

Try to contact him heavily for the next week.

If not, take it to court... but it will get ugly from there on out... and will cost too.

i did, all three of his emails. he just refused to answer me. damn i should have known when HIS ex was also asking for her money back but at that time, i believe his words when he said, "i didnt owe her anything." I admit, i was very stupid!!!

I didn't know any of this until I got with him...which by then was too late because I didn't want to leave him just because he was down in the dump. That would be messed up on my part. So I stuck it out and helped him straighten up his life -- now i am the one screwed!
