1. joint accounts if not married is a very stupid idea, you are still building a relationship.

2. Yes I would Sue the $hit out of her, at least get a judgment in your behalf.

3. You can go to any bank and open an account, if you want a credit card, ask about a secure credit card or a credit builder account. Mean nonething more than a positive balance must be maintained. $500.00 credit card limit, you would be required to maintain 500.00 in the account. After a period of time, they will raise you limit and wave the security amount.

U need a lawyer...
If you can prove in court that you had no knowledge of her actions and did not participate you can probably get your credit repaired...

Why oh why would you get a joint account?

QFT

especially since you are are not married

Even if you're married, I wouldn't get a joint account.
If you can't trust your wife to have a joint account, divorce the bitch.
I'm calling shens on this. Nobody is that stupid to have a joint account with a girl whom they are only dating.
You know they are! I had a joint account with mrsskoorb before we got married, but then I'm obviously a better judge of character than the OP :D

i dont see why you can't get another account if the bank knows its her who did this. i would talk to them about it, see if you can open another account at the same bank but without the ex-beotch.

Look into a secured credit card. You start out with a very small line ($500) that you pre-pay. That should help you start to get credit worthy...

Why don't you swing by Walmart for a little more ammo?

We have joint accounts and personal accounts. All pre-marital assetts are separate

My ex-girlfriend (can you guess why we broke up?) wrote about $3000 in bad checks on our joint account over the period of a month or two. Not surprisingly, the account was closed.

Although written on our joint account, all checks were signed and passed by the ex. The good news is the bank, affected business and now the State Attorney's office are all going after the ex-girlfriend. As of today, I have not received a single threatening letter or collections call. The bad news? I am now forced to do all my purchases in cash. Just try that some time!

Given that I have lost my credit card, debit card and checking account; how do I go about getting another account? Will I ever bank again?

Currently it looks like I will be denied an account, regardless of where I go until the matter is settled. And by settled, they mean everyone is payed off.

As I don't really plan on paying off the ex's felonious check kiting spree, what are my options? Should I take her to court?

-Merkin

You should be able to open an account and use a debit card. No credit card for you until the matter is settled in a good way.
Taking her to court will cost you lawyer money, and you won't get money from her as she wasn't able to even pay her checks. It might help to have a court declare you inocent of this, so you will have your financial credibility back

I think the best idea is to try and make an appointment with the bank manager and explain your situation. Maybe he will make an exception? Maybe you'll have to agree to some stipulations but it sure would beat throwing your money under the mattress.
