Ex-Girlfriend wrote over $3000 in bad checks!

My ex-girlfriend (can you guess why we broke up?) wrote about $3000 in bad checks on our joint account over the period of a month or two. Not surprisingly, the account was closed.

Although written on our joint account, all checks were signed and passed by the ex. The good news is the bank, affected business and now the State Attorney's office are all going after the ex-girlfriend. As of today, I have not received a single threatening letter or collections call. The bad news? I am now forced to do all my purchases in cash. Just try that some time!

Given that I have lost my credit card, debit card and checking account; how do I go about getting another account? Will I ever bank again?

Currently it looks like I will be denied an account, regardless of where I go until the matter is settled. And by settled, they mean everyone is payed off.

As I don't really plan on paying off the ex's felonious check kiting spree, what are my options? Should I take her to court?

Talk to a lawyer.

How long were you two together? I'm surprised to see you had a join account with a girlfriend.

You'll likely be placed on ChexSystems (I believe that's the name), and so that will definitely hinder your ability to get another account for several years. Some banks are more forgiving, but you have to look around; you might even be able to petition to have your name removed, if it's even really on there.

Good luck!

You're screwed. Once you're on ChexSystem, you'll be denied bank account at all major banks. Only way around this is find a small bank that doesn't use ChexSystem or something similar or know someone at the bank who can override it and give you account anyway.

Hmm, I did a google search since I don't know WTF his username means, and see that his name is going around a few blogs, ironically enough, due to his google search post. :)

PayPal will send you a debit card without checking ChexSystems. Of course, you have to fund your PayPal account from a bank account. But a friend could help you out with that.

Gee, thanks for all of the free dating advice, fellas!

I should point out that we were together for well over 10 years and a "registered domestic partnership" in our city. The "partnership" allowed us to have some of the benefits of married couples, without being married. I guess girlfriend is an understatement, but "domestic partner" sounds so... so... gay!

I was wondering if I could demonstrate the fact that I was not an active participant through the fact that all checks were passed by the ex. I can literally show this transaction by transaction, as I have a full report of activity on the account. I would think this information might tip the scales in my favor.

I find it strange that she is the one being sued and having her wages garnished, and that I still can't get an account. I understand the Chex system, and the risk of joint accounts, but their must be some kind of workaround.

Awaiting more helpful info!

Now that is what I am talking about. That, my friend, is a workaround. Keep 'em coming.

Wait a minute here. So you're gay and your boyfriend plays the female role?
