Both men and women have sex with no intention of producing children - they may be finacially or emotionally unready. We live in a society where there are lots of willing adoptive parents that cannot find children. I think when either partner recognizes that they are not ready for children, forcing them to continue to be involved makes little sense. And I think we should be, as a society, past blaming people for having sex. That's all.

And yes, things are less complicated on a 27 foot sloop. 😉

The difference I see HAL, in many of your posts, is that you take your morals and opinions and attempt to apply them to everyone, as if they are the only morals and opinions that are valid.

I agree with some of your ideas. For example, personally I would never have an abortion. However, I understand that other people have different, and just as valid, morals and opinions, and backgrounds and beliefs from me. I don't try to subject those people to the rules guided by my own personal morals and opinions. I don't try to tell them what they should or should not do. Laws typically cover the obvious exceptions: Do not steal, etc.

There is no one RIGHT way. Everyone has to make up their own mind what is ok and what is not ok.

Have an opinion, just don't expect everyone else to agree with it, and don't decide what someone else should do, based on your own personal morals.

The biggest problem I see with taking away the consequences of having to care for a child financially or otherwise, is that it will result in far, far more unwanted children in an already crappy system. I would like to believe most people are responsible enough to take precautions even if there was no risk of having to pay for an unwanted child, but even with the potential consequences of having to pay to raise a child, many don't.

I don't suppose there is any way to know, but I suspect that most people would continue to use condoms and other forms of birth control. The flip side of this moral hazard argument is that the current arrangment could encourage women to avoid or sabotage birth control in an effort to trap the man.

This may be my last post on the subject. I hate arguing with you, and if we ever found ourselves in such a situation, I sure these wouldn't be the options we'd be considering anyway 😉
