EVGA GTX970 SSC Removed From Stores??

I have recently uncovered a strange an perplexing situation regarding the EVGA GTX 970 SSC video cards.

First off I have noticed a plethora of problems pertaining to this card including coil whine, poor cooling, bad power phase, bad PCBs, stuttering frames, etc. I myself have one of these cards and when I
went to NCIX.com where I bought it to investigate the possibility of major complaints I was surprised to see that the item was already listed as no longer available. This is strange for a video card that has
only been on the market for such a short while. All the other models of the EVGA GTX 970 and 980 cards are still listed everywhere still available. Some are either back-ordered or pre-ordered, but they are
still all listed for sale, unlike the GTX 970 SSC. This card has all but vanished from major retailers.

That wasn't the only place where these cards seem to have been removed from the market. It also couldn't be found at newegg.ca, tigerdirect.ca, canadacomputers.com as well as the American counterparts of
these companies.

I spoke to an EVGA rep on the phone who swore he knew nothing about this and indicated the card may be temporarily out of stock. That does nothing to explain why all other cards are also in short supply but
are still being offered as a back-order or pre-order where as this one isn't even being offered for sale.

I've been building computers for 16 years and I've been lied to before by manufacturers who wanted to keep a lid on their shoddy products. This is nothing new.

I believe this could warrant a closer look and by telling people this I'm hoping someone could look into this particular issue and maybe make some inquiries into exacly why this particular card had
vanished.I look to this site often to make an informed purchases and to solve problems amd I understand that many people know the intricacies of video cards and their pros, cons, and details of various
features and functions.

There may be many people out there who ended up buying poorly made video cards with possible manufacturing defects and problems. A simple search on various American and Canadian retail stores will reveal
the truth of what I am saying. This particular card is almost all but dissappeared.

I'm waiting to hear back from another EVGA support person as well as NCIX but after that I'm going to post on the EVGA forum to inform others about this weird situation but I realize that this forum could
inform many more people about potential problems than I can what with the scope of this websites large readership as well as being a very reliable source for technical information regarding all things
computers.

There may be serious issues with these cards that are not being spoken of and certainly not indicated by the manufacturer EVGA.

I'm hoping this is not the case and thousands of people have been sold a defective product which could be a virtual ticking time bomb.I'm also hoping someone could look into this situation and shed a little
light on what is actually happened to thes cards.

Welcome to AT Kid!

EVGA has been dropping the ball for a long time now. Besides their PSU, sleeved PSU cables, and EVGA Classified cards, everything else* they sell is cheap quality. The ACX 1.0 and 2.0 coolers show inferior performance and noise levels to the offerings from Zotac, Gigabyte, ASUS, Galax and MSI. About the only shining light in their GPU business is the warranty. Otherwise, if looking strictly at build quality, quality of parts and cooling system, EVGA GPUs are near the bottom of the stack. The only thing worse is getting a reference 760 style blower 970 from PNY/Palit.

* Of course reference 780/780Ti/980 are excluded since EVGA haven't had a chance to downgrade NV's reference design with those :).

EVGA makes heaps of models of cards. The SSC is a pretty high clocked model. Could just be a lack of chips that meet the binning requirements. As could be many of the issues.

I think this is part of the issue, the other part being if the chips do make the cut, they are also good enough for the FTW edition, which is in much higher demand. Being that FTW card is available for step-up, a lot of people are waiting for that card.

I have the 970 SSC and except for coil whine (which ASUS, MSI, Gigabite, Palit and others have too, not just EVGA) the card runs great, cool and silent. No complaint.

But I could understand EVGA pulling this card off the list when you compare it to the FTW which is clock slightly higher, have a better heatsink and I think have a LED. Apart from that they both are the same cards.

One of those could easily get off the list and the SSC would be my choice.

And Kid, you complain about problems on the SSC model, do YOU have those problems on your side? If not, why worry? If the card breaks EVGA will replace it with the same model and if the said model doesn't exist anymore you'll get an equivalent.

Sent my EVGA 970s back as soon as I realized they skimped on the VRMs. The other issues such as the backplate being removed (then finally they offered the mail in option weeks after launch after a big backlash), coil whine, and subpar cooler. I used to feel confident buying EVGA products, but I'll never buy them again.

Coil whine is not only on EVGA cards, it's in the 970 design, not a company issue.

Honestly, my 970 SC has been fantastic. It was great on air cooling and even better on water. No coil whine and has been rock-solid. I am pretty sure I can get another 100-200mhz out of it when I can feed it more voltage. Seriously, even with max voltage allowed on stock BIOS, it's only hitting ~102% power target at ~1550mhz. Its a beast...

Edit: Now coil-whine on my EVGA 285's were a WHOLE different story. Drove me crazy...that didn't last long though, sold them pretty fast.

I DID contact tech support with my problem. When my PC is idle my screen goes black for several seconds and when it comes back on the Aero theme is disabled and if I'm gaming the game is crashed or frozen when it comes back. Tech support blamed Windows 7 or my motherboard. Maybe it is but I ran a EVGA GTX in this PC for almost 3 years with no problem.
