My understanding is that COVID is killing minorities more than whites in the U.S. If that is the case, I'm not sure that COVID is going to have much impact on the racial demographics on the U.S (unless the mortality rate jumps way up in a future variant).

No, it's not just you. There's an article up on CNN about the census which says that it shows a pattern of accelerating urbanization and rural flight.

This BTW is a bigger problem for the GOP than white/non-white balance in the population. Because people who move to cities, even if previously conservative, tend to shift leftward as they live there, and, if they have kids there, the kids are very likely to be left leaning.

How is that a problem for the GOP? If anything it helps them cement their advantage in the Senate and perpetuate minority rule at the state level.

You mean, if a bunch of people in, say, rural Texas, move to Dallas, or Austin or Houston and start voting democrat, that doesn't help the dems?

You're probably thinking about movement within a blue state, or from a red state to a blue state. You're right it wouldn't help us much then. In the short term.

But in the long term, more people being liberal is better. People tend to migrate. The same rural conservative who moved to say, Chicago for a job, became liberal, could find himself living in a purple state some day.

We're going to have to do something about that, structurally. Right now we don't have the votes to end the filibuster and pass legislation to end gerrymandering, or at least minimize the corruption in it. If that has not happened before these demographic changes become electorally significant, we're screwed.

In any event, Houston's aborted fetus not withstanding, it would still help us in Senate elections and POTUS elections in the state. In TX in particular, it already has.

I was about to say that.
Republicans will need to:
Double down on gerrymandering.
Find new and better ways to cheat.
Lying works. The Trump lying worked. So, double down on the lying.
More laws to Suppress the vote. The non-white vote.

And.... if all else fails just have the guy that lost, the republican that lost simply proclaim that he won. And after that, send hundreds of supporters to storm the capitol.
Republicans seldom win without cheating so, just double down on the cheating.
And republicans did expect this result so that was why Trump tried all he could to toss a wrench into the process. Republicans seen this coming long long time ago and the very next day began writing their voter suppression laws. The very next day mind you.....
