OK, it ran fine on my old computer, but now it won't on this one for some reason.

Problem Description: OK, so I install EverQuest, all goes well, it asks if I want to install DirectX 7.0, I say no because I have 8.1 already (at least I assume, Medal of Honor runs fine, so). Even if I say yes, it craps out, error dialogs and whatnot. So, that closes up, I double click on the tutorial. It runs fine. I double click on Test Everquest, it works all the way til close to the end, then this little ah heck prints up:

Looking up address of update server.
Connecting to update server.
Receiving file "mssdx7sh.m3_".
Connection lost.
EverQuest file update failed. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator or internet service provider for assistance.
(patch.everquest.com:7000TCP)

* ERROR *: Corrupt or missing file on update server.
If the problem persists, email
<everquest@sonyinteractive.com>

If this is your first time playing EverQuest, refer to "Troubleshooting Your Connection" in "EverQuest_Manual.txt"in your EverQuest folder.

Alright...queer I think. I try to run EverQuest itself, and it doesn't even let me get that far. A dialog pops up, stating: "The procedure entrypoint _AIL_DLS_set_reverb@16 could not be located in the dynamic link library mss32.dll "

Argh. I think the problem is lying in DirectX somwhere, but I don't know what exactly to do about it. Or if I'm even right in that assumption.

Help!

EDIT: man, how could I forget the system specs:

Dell PC
Windows XP
DirectX 8.1
GeForce 3
Santa Cruz Sound card
512 MB RAM
2.0 Ghz Pentium 4
DSL connection

My suggestion would be to Uninstall EQ completly, then go and manually delete the directory (this is important), and then reinstall it. then run Everquest.exe. Don't run testeverquest.exe, thats only if you plan to play on the test server, which i'm pretty sure you don't.

I know this may seem odd... but was there any chance you installed EQ into C:\Windows or C:\WINNT accidentally? That would cause the same error as well.

Have you run a virus scan yet?

Apparently it might be Winamp that is causing the crash... you have that installed?

I ran a virus scan a few days ago, none found.

Yeah, I have winamp installed, what might be the deal there?

Well, if you take a look at the error... it's definitely a sound problem. Try uninstalling winamp or download this and install it

http://www.radgametools.com/down/milessndsys/milest32.exe[/q

Before I download that, what is it?

it's a codec for mp3... but it's a more beefed up one... try uninstalling winamp, and if that doens't work... delete that .dll file first.

K, I'll uninstall winamp, but it should be noted that whenever i run the test server one it redownloads it for me. Just as well, because if I tried to run EQ itself without running the test server first it won't because it says it's missing that dll. Go figure. So, after uninstalling winamp, should I try to run it with or without the dll there?

Found mss32.dll in EQ folder and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Deleted both, tried again-no dice. Get rid of Winamp now and try again (still w/o mss32?)

edit: I really dont think getting rid of mss32 will solve anything, because if I try to run EQ w/o it, it changes the error message to "missing mss32.dll"

So get rid of it, uninstall winamp and try again? Sorry if it's like pulling teeth with me, I just want to make sure we're on the same page.

Well, uninstall winamp, then do a search for mss32.dll, and delete it if you find it.

when the patcher redownloads mss32.dll, where does it go? into the everquest folder?

OK, I uninstalled winamp, deleted mss32.dll . What I'm telling you though is EQ itself wont even run the patcher without the mss32 already being there. The patcher only runs (and downloads a new mss32 into the EverQuest folder) when I run the test exe.

ooooh... ok, now that's strange. Do this, go directly into the everquest folder, and double click on everquest.exe ... does that work?
