Ever wonder what happens when you stick metal objects in USB ports?

Maybe I will try memory later, but theres no fvcking way i'm taking the CPU out! I don't mind killing pieces of the computer, just not the whole thing!

hey it was worth a try to ask.

what about video card? unplug the ATX from the mobo? how about plugging a HDD cable onto a radeon 9700 with aq modified cable LOL

I dunno 🙂

it's about time to go home.

Haha, that's pretty sweet.

LOL that video card one is great.

You should post in General Hardware and link the pictures there, not all those tech junkies read OT 🙂

I had a client who's kid yanked the joystick cord and it fuxerd the USB ports. After that they couldn't use USB or PS/2 Keyboard anymore... everything else was fine. They bought a new USB card and joystick still worked but their Keyboard was still dead.

I came out, w/ usb keyboard... and it worked fine. However, only in windows... the bios option to enable dos support of USB KEyboard was disabled and you couldn't change it because no PS/2 keyboard to get into bios. But I did my job...

Well, I like to do a thorough job, so, on a whim I decided to investigate the USB ports a bit closer and noticed that the port had been mangled pretty bad and was shorted internally from the bent metal. I unbent the metal so it wasn't shorted, and PS/2 port worked fine after that. But it had been shorted all that time, and nothing bad happened... including the USB port working fine again afterwards. the connectors were bad so I disabled it and let them use the add-on card, but, otherwise everything was fine.

So, yes, I know what happens when you short a USB Port... nothing horribly bad in one case.

As long as you're doing stuff with metal and electricity, I'll give you a tip. Never EVER touch the board underneath your monitor. Dear god that holds alot of electricity. I was using my monitor with teh cover off and touched the board and it felt like it burnt the muscles in my arm 😛

Why did you have the cover off of your monitor? I don't know about LCDs, but CRT monitors hold enough charge to kill you I believe. Be careful!

Actually, I've hot plugged in and out PCI cards without trouble. Actually, it wasn't me, it was my dad doing it right infront of me because he didn't want to shut it down. I was shocked.... but it worked

And yes, he knew what he was doing but he's worked with computers for a long time and has much less f34r than me, then again, it was only some cheap PCI cards like USB ports ones and some free network card ones.

Does this apply to LCDs too? JW, its not like i'm going to take the LCD apart. It's too awesome.
