At what point do you/did you start to feel like poking your eyeballs out with a #2 pencil? Did you succeed (in quitting, not poking your eyes out)?

I'm at 100 hours right now, and it's starting to get a little tense.

I quit smoking two years ago! :)

I got to that point around a week after I started. Quitting cold turkey can be really hard sometimes.

It's the probably one of the best things you will ever do for yourself.

Good luck! :)

I quit smoking July 5th of this year. I've enjoyed a about 1/2 pack total since then in social situations sporadically but have no urges anymore to buy packs.

Lucky - Cool! I was wondering if you were still smoke-free. Good to hear you got over the hump ok. :)

sward666 - Keep going!! Once you reach the top of the hump you can stop peddaling and coast, and at 100 hours I think you're at the point where you can see the top. I found myself in my car and driving to the gas station about at the 4th day...that's how close I was. But turned the car around before I got there. After a few more days it was a piece of cake. Keep going! It's one of the best decisions you can make. Now, I can walk past a smoker and tell, even though they're not smoking, that they're a smoker. My sense of smell is back! :D

I quit about 6-7 weeks ago. I used the patch for the first week. Then went cold turkey the next week. I don't think this was the best way to do it because I didn't wean myself off the nicotine like you are suppose to with the patch. I still wanted a cig every waking moment of the second week, but didn't give in. I think after about the third week, it got more tolerable for me. I believe I have it whipped now.

Good luck to you and hang in there. You can do it.

I've never tried to quit, but it's probably cause I never started in the first place.

I quit cold turkey 3 years ago...now I'll just have a cig very rarely in social situations (about twice a year if that). I never really got addicted and I think I did it more as a social thing than anything else.

I quit using the gum two years ago.

But it wasn't the gum that made it work. Watching my 70 year old mother, a 50 year smoker, in what I though was her death bed, weighing only 80 lbs, looking like a human skeleton and having pounds of mucous suctioned out of her chest every 10 minutes was what made it easier for me to quit.

Seeing her need a walker today, and not being able to walk 10 feet without getting severely out of breath is what makes it easy to stay off of them.

Oh, and quit drinking. Every time I quit, and failed, it was drinking alcohol that caused the relapse.

Good for you! Thankfully you didn't do as much damage as I did to my lungs after 15 years of smoking.

I quit February of this year after 10 years of smoking, and have been smoke free since. I used Zyban which helped a little, but not completely. It took a good month or so before I calmed down enough for life in general to be tolerable. Just hang in there, realize why you're quitting, and don't give up. Heck, the pain that I went through while quitting is definately keeping me from starting again. I don't want to go through that again.
Now, I can walk past a smoker and tell, even though they're not smoking, that they're a smoker. My sense of smell is back!
Ditto here. It's kind of weird that I can tell it, and that it just smells soooo bad. I didn't even think twice about it when I was a smoker.

Why wouldn't you want to quit? What good does smoking do for you?

I've lost seven friends in the last few years due to tobacco-related illnesses. A few years ago, a couple of days before Christmas, I sat with one friend of over thiry years as he pulled his last breath, and just last year, and I was joking with another best friend of even longer, the day before he lapsed into a coma and died. These were creative, funny people and I miss them. :(

I truly hate the tobacco companies. I think every tobacco exec for the last fifty years should be tried for crimes against humanity for the killer products they continue to market. I watched those lying assholes raise their hands before Congress and swear that tobacco was not addictive or carcinogenic.

A few years ago, California passed an initiatiative that is one of the strongest anti-smoking laws in the country. Despite the tobacco lobby spending a record amount for a private interest to defeat this initiative, it passed by a record margin of 80% - 20% margin. In the very next session of the state legislature, our electec representatives in the State Assembly passed a bill to overturn that initiative. Fortunately, the media stink that followed caused the State Senate to think better of the idea and kill it. I still have to wonder how much money it takes to get over half of a state legilative body to overturn a law passed by 80% of the voters they represent.

If you don't smoke, your buying decisions about tobacco are irrelevant to them. However, you, and those with whom you share the info, below, can have an effect by boycotting tobacco-owned food products, depriving them of income from those sources. Here's a list from Philip Morris' site:

Altoids mints
Athenos Cheeses
Baker's Chocolate and Coconut
Breakstone's Sour Cream, Cottage Cheese, etc.
Breyer's Ice Cream, Yogurt, etc.
Bull's-Eye barbecue and grilling sauces
California Pizza Kitchen pizza
Callard & Bowser Toffees
Calumet Baking Powder
Campbell Soups
Capri Sun
Churny Cheeses
Claussen Pickles
Cool Whip
Country Time (pseudo) Lemonade (They really should call this a kit, instead of a mix.)
Cracker Barrel cheeses
Crystal Light
D-Zerta
Di Giorno Italian foods
General Foods (all products)
Good Seasons Salad Dressing Mixes
Harvest Moon cheeses
Hoffman's cheeses
Jack's Pizza
Jello
Knudsen dairy products
Kool-Aid
Kraft Foods
La Vie De La Vosgienne candies
Louis Rich lunch meats
Maxwell House Coffee
Miller Beer
Minute Rice
Mirácoli pasta
Nabisco products
Oscar Meyer
Oven Fry Coatings
Polly-O Cheeses
Post Cereals
Ragu Sauces, etc.
Sanka Coffee
Sealtest dairy products
Seven Seas Salad Dressings
Shake 'N Bake
Starbucks coffees (Packaged products in stores)
Stove Top Stuffings, etc.
Taco Bell dinner kits, Salsa, etc.
Tang
Terry's candies
Toblerone and Tobler Candies
Tombstone Pizza
Yuban Coffee

The fact that it's very addictive makes you not want to quit. Do like me instead: Just don't ever start smoking.

I stopped using Alan Carr's 'easy way to stop smoking'. It was easy to stop, it just took me a long time to finish the book, about a year:)

There goes Harvey again, blaming everything and everybody else for his friend's irresponsible CHOICES.

Harvey, people are going to smoke no matter what you do. You cannot live their lives for them, nor can you save them from themselves. You KNOW this, so you instead think you can stop them by blaming tobacco companies. This is stupid as well. If you ruin them, more will just pop up in their place. If you ban tobacco all together, you'll have a crime wave on your hands that makes the War on Drugs and Prohibition look like a Boy Scout Jamboree.

Ultimately, it is your friend's fault. No one else is to blame for their CHOICE to smoke. No one twisted their arms. No one held a gun to their heads. And no one did these things even after it was common knowledge that smoking was harmfull more than 40 years ago. The best you can do is educate people.

BTW, your "boycott" is about as effective as Jesse Jackson's boycott of Nike shoes was.

Not to mention your "hate" is doing nothing but eating you alive.

"Every little bit helps"
"Every drop in the bucket..."
Etc, etc,...

I've seen Harvey post this same message many times. Obviously, he feels very strongly about the subject. Why does it bother you so much? Being such a defender of individual rights, I would think you'd let him have his say without trying to knock him down everytime he says it. It would be a good thing if nobody smoked.

When have I tried to force Harvey to not shift the blame for his friend's deaths from his friends to the tobacco companies?

Never.

Harvey has his right to whine and shift blame, and I have my right to voice my objection to his misplaced hate and point out the obvious flaws in his logic.
