My father-in-law always has the weirdest technology problems - things that never happen to me, thank goodness.

I usually do some research, find the solution, and fix it, but this one has me stumped:

My in-laws have an iPad 2 and an iPad Air (1st Gen). They were over for dinner last night, so I offered to start the update process to 9.3. I went to Settings/General/Software Update. On both of them is said:

"iOS 9.2.1 Your software is up to date".

I rebooted both of them. No change.

I did a little research and was not able to find any discussion of the problem even existing, let alone a solution. My Google-Fu has failed me.

Any thoughts?

Apple killed the updates for older devices, because of activation failures and other problems...

They'll fix it but it'll be a while.

I had seen that, but I thought the fix was already released?

I guess not.

Thanks.

I have this problem all the time.. me and my buddy have a very similar setup in terms of tech and I always have problems, he just laughs. I suspect hes bullshitting me though.

I upgraded my moms iPad to iOS 8.1, like 3-4 months after 8 was released (let the early adopters find all the bugs), but hers would just continuously return to the initial setup screen. If I wiped it, it was fine. But as soon as I restored her previous data, no go. Couldnt find anyone else with the same problem. She just had to start with a fresh iPad. She was pissed!!

Ahhh, seems there are multiple activation issues, and they're not updating older models yet, don't want to brick everyone's iPads.

Lots of updates take you back to the setup screen. It's just giving you an opportunity to activate some of the features that have been enhanced. It's usually just 1 or 2 questions. Answer them, and then you're back on the home screen with all your apps and data.

I saw that. Thanks.

So now my dad (not my father-in-law) wrote me last night:

"Do I have to install iOS 9.3 before 9.3.1 appears on my iPhone? It doesn’t show up now, only 9.3 is there."

Oy... Maybe it's me.

The same thing happened to me with my iPad mini 2. Once I installed 9.3, it then let me update to 9.3.1.

I just bought a new car last year, one that I was hoping to keep for 10 to 15 years & drive into the ground (Jeep Renegade) and I've had in the shop several times already for all kinds of computer-related failures. Last time I went in, they had to completely reformat (seriously) the car's computer (BCM, body control module) to even get it to start up. The BCM failure made EVERYTHING go bonkers - I was getting error messages on everything from the airbags to the drivetrain. As an IT guy, I just rolled my eyes :D

When I build a new PC for the wife I build an identical one for me. Doesn't happen that often (~2 years), but the end result if mine always turns out perfect and hers always has some jackass difficult problem that takes forever to solve, or remains unsolved.
