Ever crack a rib?

Was playing basket ball last night and on defence. Held my ground, had my arms up and the guy with the ball dropped his shoulder and drove it right into the outside edge of my chest below my armpit. Half blacked out for a second, but stayed on my feet, and took about 20 more seconds to get my breath back. Was able to play the rest of the night but chest was tight and hurt to take full breaths.

Wake up this morning and the whole left side of my body aches. No visible brusing. My pec muslces aren't really sore like a normal muscle contusion is. But putting any pressure against my ribs under my armpit and I immediately know it. Breathing is a little shallow due to discomfort and sneezing is an agonizing experience. Also really hurts to bend over to do things like put dishes in the dish washer, tie my shoes, ect.

Reading up sounds like there's nothing I can do but wait it out and just make sure I take deep breaths several times an hour to stay away pneumonia.

Good thing I've got some left over vicodin laying around. :$

No but did cartlidge damage between the ribs diving from 70 feet.
Sure felt like broken ribs.

Yes. I was playing flag football, the defender threw an elbow out and caught me in the ribs. It hurt like a motherfucker.

That's what I'm wondering if it's damage between the ribs vs. actual rib itself. How long did it take for that to heal up? Either way it sounds like an x-ray is mostly useless and just make sure I force myself to take deep breaths frequently.

If you can sleep laying down, it's probably bruised, not broken.

Yeah, I broke a rib playing football and was unable to lie down for a couple of weeks. I had to sleep propped up in a chair, lying down was like getting a sword plunged into my lungs.

Definitely able to lay down without too much discomfort. But where I got hit is is a little higher than normal...probably around the 5th rib. Most are lower between the 7th and 10th. Probably just bruised or some stretching/tearing of connective tissue between the ribs.

I cracked on when I was 27, it was about 2 weeks of major pain, and about another 6-8 before it quit hurting.

Bone bruises are worse than regular bruises. They hurt worse and take longer to heal. 🙁

Cracked three many years ago by chasing a foul ball and slamming into a chest high fence. Hit in front, had giant bruises on my back. Slept sitting up for 3 weeks. No fun. Ride it out and be thankful you didnt puncture a lung.

Peace

yep a few actually. 2 from a motorcycle crash, wrestling practice had a guy do a great throw on me (it fucking hurt) and once in hapkido while sparing. the sparing one was by a tiny little girl that had lightning fast kicks and packed more power then you thought she could.

Yes you can lie down with broken ribs

I assisted in treating a few patients back in my radiography days. If they're not floating, there's not much you can do but wrap your torso up in a certain way to immobilize your ribcage as much as possible. You'll be issued pain medication and have a followup appointment in a few weeks.

If you have floating ribs (rib bones are actually broken) then surgery may be required.

I take back that being able to lay down in comfort comment. Tried laying down on my back and felt like I had a spike driven from my back through my heart every time my chest contracted with a breath. It's way more uncomfortable tonight than last night.

Broke a rib playing soccer in college. I was the goalie and jumped on a break-away ball. Rolled over to protect the ball and my face and got nailed in the ribs by the other player. It hurt to push open doors with my left side for a few weeks.

make sure you set a good pick next time you play with that guy. I prefer a KG-style moving screen with a low elbow myself.

I cracked the lowermost rib on the right in high school decades ago and it still hurts way too often for my liking, like it's never healed fully because it's always in use.😡

Playing gouret de salon, which is like hockey on a gym surface with a doughnut-shaped 'puck' and broom handles for sticks.

The tip of one broom just slammed in my rib when, for once, I wasn't in goal (I used to play goal at this and handball, not in hockey though) but playing forward. People sometimes played dirty and did that on purpose, just like when you give someone a 'six-inch' in hockey by driving the pommel of your stick into an opponent when the ref is looking elsewhere.

They no longer wrap people up.

The reduced movement causes pneumonia.

Many people have died needlessly from broken ribs due fluid build up causing pneumonia from being wrapped.

Surgery is necessary they said if a rib in impinging on internal organs.

I fought off pneumonia last week and now debi is fighting the fluid build up.

Today we are going to start our journey back up to Chicago from South Florida.

Yeah, Dr. Google says wrapping has been shunned by modern medical community for the reasons Dave listed. You *want* chest expasion to fight off pneumonia.

Last night sleeping wasn't too bad. Thank you pillow top mattress and better living through chemistry. 😀
