I made my wife go with me to the gym and exercise and she felt alot better. Now she is in a poor me mood and quit going, so she is hurting and sniveling again. I might sound like an ass about this, but I have been putting up with the sh1t for 9 years, and I am really sick of it! I really hope you can get this in order, if it is not affecting your boyfriend now, it will eventually.

My fiance is very supportive of me. I'm finding out more about the drugs and trying to control as much as I can. I do as much activity as I can. If I do too much, it sends me into a flare up. I bought an elliptical runner from my doctor last year and did 5 minutes. It sent me into a flare-up for a month. I could barely even walk. I feel sorry for your wife. If you had to deal with all this crap, trust me....you'd be singing a different tune. You never know what you'll do until you're in the situation.

When I was younger, I was always judgmental of people who were addicted to other type drugs or smoked pot and whatnot. However, I realized that everyone has their vices. They may be addicted to one thing, and I may be to another. I was hooked on sodas at one point. I'm finding out, too, that it may not be full-blown addiction, but may also be just plain ole dependancy. I know my body is dependant on them to help me get through pain.

rudder - I'm no longer on the Oxycodone.

Jean - I'm going to a pain clinic on Wednesday. We'll see what they have to say. I'm hoping they can help in some way.

I like it, a lot, and after my wisdom teeth extraction, I took all the vicodins that i was given.
then went thru my old medicines and got two more bottles for 30 each. end up taking all of them except for one pill before I decide to quit. So I was on it for less then 3 months with a pill a day in the morning (skipping breakfast to get more high)

I told myself that I could stop anytime I want to. and I did, I still have that one pill sitting in my laptop bag.

You need to read a book by Dr. John Sarno called The Mind Body Prescription, you will see those pains are created by your subconscious.

Keep an open mind and spend an afternoon reading it, it cured my back pain, knee pain and migraines.

I have always heard the same thing concerning fibromyalgia. It is merely a subconcious thing.

LOL! OMG It's not subconscious. I've had to deal with this crap for years.

I am currently reading a book by Dr. Pelligrino(SP? The book is on my hutch right now.) It's called Inside Fibromyalgia. The doctor himself has it and it's a great book. It's taught me and my fiance a lot.

Haven't been myself. Anytime that I've been perscribed an addictive painkiller I've just used Tylenol or Advil. Not as strong, but they do enough for me.

I don't get the attraction of Vicodin. When I mention that I had a prescription for vicodin, everybody is like "oooh - that's some good sh|t - wink wink"

Had some after my wisdom tooth extraction in the fall - I think I took 2 of em. Helped the pain, made me sleepy, that's all.

I had minor surgery last week (umbilical hernia).
It hurt like a biatch the next two days, and I probably took another 6-9 total - actually the leftovers from the wisdom tooth surgery. Again - knocked the pain down, made me sleepy, made me thirsty, but nada on anything else. No "high" so to speak, even when I took two (which really knocked me out for a good nap).

What is it that people like so much about vicodin?
I'm not dismissing your problems hzl_eyed_grl - I've known people in similar situations, and it's no fun. I just don't get the vicodin bit.

For me, it's not exactly the feeling I get...it's the fact that it takes the edge off my pain. When I had my very first surgery at age 18, I HATED Vicodin because I didn't like the way they made me feel. After now having had 9 surgeries and fibro and stuff, I pretty much need something to help out with pain. My goal is to get to where I don't have to take them every day, but just when I have a flare-up or my pain is really bad that day. Make sense?

Sure - makes perfect sense in that respect. I guess I'm referring more to people who like/are addicted to pain killers like vicodin, who don't have a pain problem.

Pretty much take excedrin on a daily basis. I get migraines in random intervals and especially when I'm not eating constantly. I pop a pill when I start to feel the incoming headache. That's like 3x a day.

I feel like an old lady by giving you advice from what I remember seeing on 20/20, but they had some report awhile ago that said a lot of people get headaches constantly because they keep taking the pain medication.

i've been addicted to meds, not necessarily painkillers though.

if you find yourself taking pain killers regularly, maybe taper down. it's definitely ideal to stop so as not to hurt yourself. going cold turkey would cause you to suffer horrible withdrawals, and the pain isn't worth it.

that being said, if you are concerned (and this thread does indicate that you are), your best bet is probably to taper down. if you find yourself taking meds daily, take them every other day for a week or two -- then maybe every 2 days, and then stop.

that's the advice my doctor gave me for how to get off of certain pills, so maybe you can give it a shot.

be well, heather!

I know this is hardly the place to post any serious questions, but I'm trying NOT to think about hurting and taking something.

For years (as a lot of you know) I've had many health problems and many surgeries. I had a surgery on January 3rd of this year and a sinus surgery/tonsillectomy on March 15th of this year, which was my 9th surgery in 11 years. I also have a bad case of fibromyalgia and I have arthritis. Because of all the medical problems throughout the years, I was given pain killers. For a while I was addicted because I was horribly depressed and I would take them to feel numb and to just fall asleep. Now, I'm battling addiction again. I was on heavy duty pain meds for both surgeries and I take Vicodin on a daily basis for my fibro and arthritis pain. Right now I'm chewing on a low-fat cheese stick to keep me from taking anything else. (Also why I decided to post...keep my mind off of hurting.) I haven't been cleared again to take muscle relaxers because my liver function has been high, but that could be because I've lost quite a bit of weight recently.

Anyway...if you were addicted, how did you deal with it? I have real pain, but the addiction makes it worse. I try to only take it when I need it and I don't take more than I'm supposed to, but I know my body is dependant on it. Today my hands and wrists (also carpal tunnel and tendonitis in both wrists) have been hurting like a mutha. I just rubbed some kind of non-smelly arthritis cream and Blue Emu cream all over my hands and wrists to help....hopefully.

I'm SO angry. I'm angry that I let myself get this way. I'm agry that I have all these damn health problems even though there are people WAY worse off than I am and I'm ANGRY that it seems like the only thing that takes the edge off my pain even a little bit is a pill.

*Sigh*

=(
I havent had that problem yet... I seem to have a pretty high level of non addiction to most things that give others issues... smoking, drinking, some drugs, painkillers.. even though Ive had tons of each over the years none really hooked me...

now the only things so far that I prolly do have an addiction is the internet, and sex to be honest.. only things I cant keep out of my head and have an insessant urge to always do...

heck right now Ive got 2 busted toes and a bottle full of 750m Vicodins and have 0 urge to take any... id rather take a tylenol and save the vics for real nasty pain....
and even then I only take what it takes to kill the pain....
Ive had some nasty accidents and surguries that have required morphine drips and as long as the pain wasnt there i was fine with no craving for more...

I never had what I would call an addiction but I am an alcoholic. However, I have not consumed any alcohol in over 10 years. Dont Smoke cigarettes either. Smoking is just another addiction. I do not drink Caffinated drinks for Caffine high either. No coffee or caffine laden tea for me.

I believe that to truly be free you have to be the master of your body.

Yep I agree with that except that's not the case with me. I've had these headaches before I even started taking aspirin constantly to alleviate the pain. Doctors have no idea why I have these headaches either. They just tell me it's bad diet and lack of excercise which is also not true. It just is and the only way I can deal with it now is with pain killers. Fvckin sucks.

piasabird - I don't really get a high from it at all. I guess I just take it because I'm hurting. Muscle relaxants make me feel more. . .high. . .I guess you could say, than Vicodin. I don't take muscle relaxers regularly because of my liver levels right now. I think I may be in more of a dependancy state than anything. I have a very LOW pain tolerance level and the fibromyalgia intensifies all pain. :( Hell, the other day I was riding with my fiance. He yelled something really loud and because I'm so sensitive, it literally made me ill. I was to the place where I almost had to have him pull over so I could puke.

Thanks for every one else's replies. I was supposed to get these wrist brace things today and forgot. I had a pretty long day, so I can't reply to everyone right now. (Hands and wrists are hurting and I don't want to take anything right now. :) )

I don't really get sick. I just start hurting again. I have, however, only taken ONE today. *takes a bow* That's a BIG step for me. :)

The fact that you are not getting sick is extremely good as that means that you're not physically addicted.

As to what you can do, I don't really know. I would personally rather live with a slight opiate addiction than the kind of pain you are describing, but I understand how that's a really horrible thing to resolve to, but it's not your fault you are in so much pain.

There is a new pain killer coming out of the pipeline that is based of cone shell poisson, that is supposed to be very effective and not addictive at all. All I can suggest is to see a pain specialist to get a professional opinion but I would truly recommend that you try to learn as much as you can about the chemical on your own.

http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/opiates/opiates.shtml

I recommend reading as much as you can, especially the experience vaults about addiction and train wrecks.

If you ever need to talk to anyone, feel free to PM.

Maybe you could try meditation.

Well, I'm going to a pain clinic on Wednesday, so I'm hoping that they'll be able to offer something. What? I have no freaken clue. I don't really get sick when I don't take it, like I said. The pain is just what I have to deal with. My hands never used to hurt me and then about 6 months ago, they decided to start REALLY hurting. I used to be the one someone could give a jar to open and now I can barely open my medicine bottles. My hands just really hurt. I have to keep them warm all the time. (This is part of the reason I don't post as much as I used to and one of the reasons I don't chat on any messengers any more.) I just start hurting too soon. Right now I'm seeing my primary care physician, a rheumatologist, and then a pain clinic. SOMETHING's gotta give. lol

I used to have a really hard time falling asleep. One thing fibro patients HAVE TO HAVE is deep sleep. I've had two sleep studies done, and I rarely--if ever--hit REM sleep. I'm on two different sleep meds and it worked really well for a while. Now, though, I'm waking up every morning around 5:30. I swear....my body is just so wacky sometimes. UGH! :)
