Americans getting fatter, especially in the South

(Reuters) - Obesity rates climbed again last year with 28 U.S. states reporting adults are fatter now than a year ago, two advocacy groups said on Tuesday.

The annual ranking of U.S. states found 10 out of the 11 states with the highest rates of obesity were in the South with Mississippi number one for the sixth year in a row with 33.8 falling into the category.

Over 25 percent of adults in 38 states are obese

The survey also found that 84 percent of parents believe their children are at a healthy weight. Research shows nearly a third of children and teens -- more than 12 million -- are obese or overweight.

Mississippi had the highest rate of adult obesity for the sixth year in a row, while 10 of the 11 states in the South had the highest rates in the country

Hey, fat pigs! Yeah, I mean you! Go on a diet!

I'm working in MS for the summer, and yeah... I didn't think there was such a big problem (coming from Colorado) but there's no question that the south is out of fucking control. Makes me look a lot better and I'm fairly overweight myself.

Lol, I like how the headline adds "especially in the south." That really doesn't surprise me at all...

Yeah, we should force them to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Anyone in noncompliance should be imprisoned on bread and water. No more than 5% bodyfat or it's off to the treadmill with you! 1 full year without losing weight and it's the firing squad. By God that will work now won't it!

I'm glad this hasn't become much of a problem around here. I can't stand fatties, even seeing them in the store or whatever makes me feel sick to my stomach, how can people be ok with looking like that?

I predict this thread will be locked in less than a day.

Nearly a third?

I think not.
More like half the kids in America have a serious weight problem.

I blame Nintendo. Oh, and HFCS. And salt. And Ronald McDonald.

Oh, and the corporations. They're being all corporationy. It's the sugar and corn corporations that are killing our babies.

I blame lack of self control. Americans have forgotten what it is and everything has to be the fault of someone else. They(we) can't be held accountable for anything.

I blame Pantlegz for this atrocity against our children. He's on the internet and kids spending all their time on the internet and xbox live is why they're so damned fat. I blame the internet and microsoft! Oh, and Pantlegz.

We (and our children) are not "fat". The problem is that American society teaches a perception of body image that discriminates against those people who through no fault of their own happen to be physically larger than others. In addition to education and sensitivity training, what is needed are new standards for what is considered to be an attractive and healthy body image.

I wonder how many people ages 12-30 can run 100 yards without getting out of breath in the USA. From what I see daily, it wouldn't be many.

no fault of their own my giant ass

Obamanation just passed a government health care bill. It is my fucking business.

It was your business anyway because hospitals and doctors didn't magically create money out of thin air to treat those same diseases before. It is built into their charges to other people (i.e. you) and, likely, local taxes.
