This is going to be a good year for anime heh. X TV is coming this fall, Escaflowne Box/Movies in august, Eva movies in July, I My Me Strawberry Eggs in August, and we're still waiting on FLCL/KareKano, but those oughta be good releases too....man, there goes all my vacation money hehe.

I was told by a US anime DVD insider that the last 2 episodes of Eva were kind of just tacked on the end. The director finished the story in 24 episodes, but the production company or studio or whoever demanded 2 more episodes because it was so popular. So the director said, whatever, I'll just pull something trippy out of my arse...(that really has nothing to do with the rest of the series)

Yeah I thought the ending was kinda sucky too. I was hoping for a HUGE battle but nope. What other anime do you guys recommend? I recommend Love Hina. Mad Funny.

Request:
Since we're on the topic of anime, and since I haven't exactly been keeping abreast of what's out there, I'd like to request some anime recommendations from all y'all experts.

So here's what I like:
I LOVE Studio Ghibli's work. All of it. Dearly. Every aspect of it. My favorite was Castle in the Sky: Laputa. But really I love all of 'em. I also much enjoyed Macross Saga. Character development, good storytelling/drama, strong humanistic elements and an imaginative world count for a lot for me. Stuff like Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Metropolis I enjoy too, but it's not dear to me the way Ghibli work and Macross are. I liked Evangelion well enough, I guess. Finally, I really liked StarBlazers, but I've only seen it as a little kid, so I don't know if that would hold true today.

Here's what caught my eye:
When I was at the anime store, a couple of titles looked interesting to me. One was "Lain". Another was "Cowboy Bebop".

Request again:
I would really appreciate it if someone could point me to some anime that they think I might enjoy, based on the preferences I've indicated here. There are so many anime out there . . . a little guidance would be very helpful!

Thanks.

- Henry

Manko: Actually, you're kinda close...but kinda not....the original TV ending of eps 25/26 were director Anno's original intention of how to end the series. When he did that series, it basically mirrored himself and his feelings. Look at it this way, whenever they're talking about Shinji in the end, it's really Anno referring to himself. As for the movies, the TV audiences were very rude and were not satisfied with the TV ending, so that's when he made End of Evangelion plus Death/Rebirth. End of Eva was his way of getting back at the TV audience by portraying their favorite characters in the most degrading ways possible (c'mon, the opening scene heh).

Madcool: Again, about the ending, Anno never intended for there to be a 'huge battle' as the entire series is REALLY about the relationships/interactions between the characters and their psyche, not about the Evas. The Eva's were merely metaphorical tools in the plot. That's why the original TV ending was so abstract, etc.

Ohhenry1: As for good anime series....there are TONS of really good series/movies out there. But it all depends on what you're into. Some really great series for example are Furi Kuri (FLCL/Fooly Cooly is the US name), Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His & Her Circumstances is US name), Nadia, Lain is really good, Boogiepop Phantom, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Crest of the Stars, Key the Metal Idol, Hand Maid May, Love Hina, Great Teacher Onizuka, Vandread, Soultaker, Ranma 1/2, Mononoke Hime, Kiki's Delivery Service (forget the japanese name), Grave of the Fireflies, Jin-Roh, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor the Yamadas, Whispers of the Heart, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Ghibli's newest film), I My Me Strawberry Eggs, DiGi Charat, Ebichu (VERY funny), DNA^2 (classic), Fruits Basket, Inu Yasha, Noir, Flame of Recca, Mahoromatic, Onegai Teacher, Kaitou Saint Tail, Trouble Chocolate, Virus Buster Serge, Vampire Princess Miyu, Outlaw Star, Excel Saga, Video Girl Ai, Vision of Escaflowne, Kachou Oji (Black Heaven), Kaikan Phrase (the manga is better), Chikyuu Shoujo Arujuna (Earth Girl Arujuna), X the movie, X TV series, Jubei-chan....this is just a small list of the anime I've seen and can REMEMBER. There are tons of really good series out there, I'd advise you check out Anime Web Turnpike (AniPike) to read up on these series.

So is it confirmed that the new box set doesn't have ANY english overlays or other modifications of the orginal series? If that's true, I'll buy it, but if anything's changed I'd rather just get a Japanese version with no subtitles (since I already have a subtitled version on VHS).

I lived in HK and rented legit anime there before- the dialogues are in Chinese. Obviously it's not translated very well either.

I've seen some DivXes on my friend's computer with both chinese & english subtitles. I don't speak japanese all that well yet so I can't comment on their translation but when I rewatched gundam 0083 I realised how much I missed from the rented tape :/

as for translation... it's pretty hard to get it right from asian/european languages since they're so different (I can translate chinese>english english>chinese). european>european is much better... Don't you just love Run Lola Run? Scheisse Scheisse! yep I speak german too the subtitles on there is pretty good.

It's much harder to buy pirated stuff from hong kong unless you know somebody that can buy it underground for you. Surprisingly, a lot of western people that live/work in hong kong buy pirated stuff too. Their response? screw microsoft blah blah blah. It's tempting to buy windows XP at 10 US dollars but hey... I'm going way off here. Good animes need your support so dont be cheap 🙂

<< having already bought all the dvds individually, where can i get the new remastered dvd vol. 1? >>

Eventually, it's going to replace the current Evangelion DVD 1 floating around the market. So you'll just be able to pick it up off the store shelves.
Alternatively, you could buy the remastered DVD 1 and an empty box for the DVDs you already own from Right Stuf. That way, you can be sure of what you're getting.

It's also worth me saying, this release is completly unedited. It's exactly how it aired on Japanese TV, not overlayed, it's uncut.

Let me say though, that this box is AWESOME. I got in the mail Friday from planetanime.com

Well, ChibiShin has a great list (even though I haven't seen al of them). But, yes Bebop (series and movie) and Lain are definitely good bets. And check out anything from Miyazaki for sure.

<< Kiki's Delivery Service (forget the japanese name) >>

- it's "Majo no Takkyubin"

Definitely get ahold of Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away), which is Miyazaki's latest film. I think Disney/Miramax may have the US rights to this one, but I'm not sure if it's going straight to video or theatrical (after they screwed up the Mononoke marketing). I'm assuming you've already seen My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari No Totoro). If not, go get it.

By the way, when I was in Japan a couple months ago, I just realized there is a Studio Ghibli Kid's Theme Park/Museum. Check it out. (Japanese link). I'm definitely going to go check it out next time I get over there (it also happens to be in the same town where I was an exchange student.)

Escaflowne is a pretty cool series too (the movie too). I like Gasaraki, which is a pretty straight foward, "realistic" mecha show. I also really like Please Save My Earth, but you'll be disappointed with the ending because there isn't one (they didn't really finish the series). I'll second Jin-Roh too. Perfect Blue is another one. As for comedy, Crayon Shinchan from a few years ago is always hilarious (in Japanese, at least).

Also check out Metropolis (oh - i just noticed you already have) , which Sony has the US rights to. April 23rd, US DVD and video release. Did anyone catch this in a theater over here? I was out of the country then, so I didn't even know it had a US theatrical release. I'm sure they only put it out for a week or so, right?

There are ALOT of GREAT anime out there right now... (after that dry spell the last two years)
Two more great shows to look out for, Hellsing and Full Metal Panic... Hellsing just got bought by Pioneer I belive, so you won't see too many more eps released fansub (1-13 out) and Full Metal Pantic just had ep 12 released.
These are both great animes...

If you are really looking for anime, and are having trouble finding it, get ahold of me and I'll be happy to help you out. I have currently about $8k worth in my house and probably 350+ gigz online...
I am not asking for trades, I don't want anything I can't already get, but I love spreading anime.. (Get ahold of me if you live around Jacksonville, FL and would like to start up an anime club!!!!)
I can point you in the right directions and tell you what animes you will like based on certain criteria... on a person to person basis. BobOki's E-mail

BTW!! End of EVA... Did you know that the crew hired three religion experts to spear-head the story and the facts about the entire death/rebirth of the planet theme? Cost to Gainax: $45k.... Cost of film: $5M.. Cost of artists..... : $550k... thats SOME expensive anime!

Manko: Yeah, I heard about that Miyazaki museum/park a while back, I believe it opened up sometime last year, I know it was just recently. I believe it was around the time Sen to Chihiro was released. I'm really looking forward to seeing it...it'll probably be a couple years before I can go to Japan, since I'm a broke ass student...but I've got friends who have family there, so it wouldn't be too difficult.

dukdukgoos: As far as I know, I believe the only DVD to have crappy overlays was DVD1, which has since been remastered. The reason the other reason they remastered is because after the first dvd or so they started using another dvd production company to master them. So they also wanted to get the same video quality, etc. If you want more info you might wanna check out the AnimeOnDvd link that Raziel posted already, they've got a very comprehensive listing of DVDs and reviews for them.

boboki: The last two years have had some really good anime! Love Hina, Furi Kuri, Crest of the Stars, Vandread, Hand Maid May, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, just to name a few...I mean it really all depends on what you're into, but those were all some very popular anime. On top of that, FLCL had some really astonishing visuals heh. The animation was great, and I still can't get over that 'south park' style scene in there hehe. But yeah, just last year alone had a lot of new anime coming through, almost too much.

Oh yeah, other good anime I just remembered, how can I forget Berserk and Record of Lodoss Wars. Those were two really good series. Berserk is going to be released in May I believe, and ROLW has already been released.

<< BTW!! End of EVA... Did you know that the crew hired three religion experts to spear-head the story and the facts about the entire death/rebirth of the planet theme? Cost to Gainax: $45k.... Cost of film: $5M.. Cost of artists..... : $550k... thats SOME expensive anime! >>

And yet people still actually believe that Gainax did EoE only because of the fans' bitching.
