I'm not sure, though, what you mean by ' institutions that support it'. Are you referring to the Constitution? I don't see that having a written constitution is implicit in being a democracy, and apart from that I don't see how the US is any different from most of the other democracies out there.

The EU gets a lot of stick for being undemocratic, which is fair enough, but its not too dissimilar to the way the US works. While the European Parliament is directly elected, the Commission is made up of members appointed by National governments, who are themselves directly elected. To me that doesn't sound too dissimilar to the way the US electoral college selects a President.

Except the people living here are not ready to see europe as a single republic.

Exactly.
I'll say it again, we're too different.

Sweden and Norway could probably merge with relative ease.
Latvia and Spain? Doubtful.
Sweden, Latvia, Spain, France, Poland, and England? Extremely doubtful.

All of the current EU? No way.

Oh and by the way, Specop, did you read the link I provided with regards to the UN proposal?
On a sidenote, I saw this a while back and came to think of it again while reading that Newsmax article.
Using obviously flawed statistics(AKA lying) isn't the sign of a trustworthy news source.

As much as i like the idea of th EU, I'm afraid I won't see it fully working in my lifetime.
I have to agree with sunner; the differences are just too great.

I think the lastest addition of a lot of eastern european countries has made the EU too large.

i'm crossing my fingers 🙁
