I got thinking about this earlier today when I was eating at taco bell earlier today. This kid pulled up on a really nice Trek road bike and didn't lock it up. It was sitting right next to the window and I could clearly see that the registration on it was scraped off. There wouldn't have been time to get the police there before he left, but I thought if I took it from him would that have been wrong?

I bought a guitar amp from a guy who said he stole it from a school. I figure I bought it fair and square, but he was the one who stole it. I wound up selling it on ebay for 4x the amount I bought it :)

And you are fvking proud of it :disgust:

Oh give me a break. What I did was morally fine...but probably not illegal. There was no way in hell this amp was going to be returned and I doubt the school even noticed it was gone and would only make an issue of it.

No it was not morally fine. You knew it was stolen and buying known stolen goods IS illegal. Who cares if it was going to be returned, you should have turned him in, maybe they would have given it to you. :)

In regards to the OP, if you took the bike, YOU would have been guilty of theft, since there's NO WAY you could verify that it was actually stolen, nor do you have the legal right to get involved beyone calling the cops. THAT would have been the right action, let them handle it if they care.
As for the stolen guitar amp, in his first post, he acknowledges that it was stolen, yet he bought it then re-sold it. That is at the minimum, recieving stolen property, and if the cops really wanted to be nasty, possibly some other charges related to possession of stolen property and depending on the local laws, other charges as well. Legally and morally, he is guilty IMO.

hell no it wouldn't be wrong. it's not his. you shoulda taken it and told the cops about the bike... if the bike was not reported, then it's yours :) that's ethically sound.

You have your comparison a little off. It is more like killing someone who has already been killed.

I think it's funny that thread would come up because yesterday my friend and I went and picked up this supposedly copped bike in the woods
it was pretty nice except the frame had some smashes in it and the front wheel was a TOTAL mess (spokes all over the place)

I didnt want anything to do with it, of course, it's totally wrong and illegal ;)
