They make that as they are being trained and getting housing and other perks. Training + Exp = money. Seals go in with little, come out with a lot.

After they are trained they leave and make good money. I have many people from the military making 200k+ working for the Gov in security matters.

Let's say the OBL's compound had a 2,000 pound bomb dropped on it. The SEALs going in did not know 100% that OBL was inside. Had a bomb destroyed everything, no one would know OBL's true fate. And this does send a clear message... Osama had minimal security and felt secure knowing no one was coming after him... if his cohorts were smart.. they would start realizing that unless they wanted to live in North Korea... they will be found.

Not to mention that - if we had bomb'd the place - there is a high chance such an action would kill other people in the vicinity. A soldier in the ground understands "..over there is outside the compound, so I will not shoot those guys...", whereas a bomb or missile simply explodes and too bad for you if you happen to be in the blast radius.

Navy SEALs Earn About $54,000 a Year, Even for Finding Osama Bin Laden

What did the Navy SEALs who cornered Osama bin Laden get for pulling off such a risky mission? Their weekly paychecks.

The estimated maximum salary for a Navy SEAL -- with over a dozen years of experience and an E-7 pay grade -- is about $54,000, according to an estimate based on data from the Department of Defense.

"Each of these operations is different, but we get the same amount of pay, so it's fair," said John Scorza, MC2, under the Naval Special Warfare Command.

That salary level is comparable to the average annual salary for teachers in the U.S., which was $55,350 for the 2009-2010 school year, according to the Digest of Education Statistics.

"Also note that military personnel may have more extensive benefits and on-base housing," said Lori Taylor, a professor at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. "But they work year 'round while teachers get 2 to 3 months off in the summer."

Though Navy SEALs are usually more experienced service members, the typical graduate of SEAL qualification training is 19 to 23 years old, said Lt. Cmdr. Fred Kuebler of U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla.

A bit confusing as 54k is the maximum salary. I assume the Bin Laden heroes got less.
There's more at the link about what kind of benefits they get, etc.

Interesting. I really had no idea what a Seal makes.

Cliffs: Teachers are overpaid.

Agree with everyone who says that people don't become Navy SEALS for the money. That being said, I've always thought the huge pay disparity between officers and senior NCOs was kind of ridiculous.

1) Does anyone really care about his true fate? Did it make any difference?
2) Clear message of a bomb is sent, we will find you, and bomb the shit out of you. They would know if their leader was dead or not, same effect, just no PR for obama to ride on.
3) Who cares about collateral damage. Bombs send a clear message, if you harbor a enemy of the US, we will bomb the shit out of them and not give a shit about your people.
4) Bombing them has less risk to us. Who cares about people living in a country that isn't acting in our best interests anyways?

In the end, we killed one man and accomplished nothing of value. I don't see why this is a cause to parade around the news and media like we just saved the world.

These dudes are set for life if they ever want to move into civillian jobs.

MBA harvard would love to have an ex-seal.

By virtue of there being no shortage of SEALs, means that SEALs are not underpaid. I'm quite sure that the job satisfaction of being a SEAL is also very high. Why are you guys complaining if they're not complaining?

I'm not complaining. I believe they're worth more.

Jon Stewart had a picture of Seal Team 6 on his show last night:

And you're a fat fuck that works for the government.

Aww did I hurt someones feelings.

So how is that million dollar idea working, or you looking for a new job while working the awesome one, etc...? 😀

JS80; no one will ever accuse him of letting facts get in the way of him, no sir.

Wow.. ok..
Bombs/Cruise Missiles yes they have their place.. but for high value targets like this you need someone to go kick the door in..
With explosives you lose the bodies and most evidence of death is very messy making DNA usually the only way to get a match and that's after digging out the entire bombing site.

You obviously haven't seen the true mess a 2000 lb bomb makes when it hits a regular structure.. there isn't much left..of the building or whats inside of it.

We wanted him alive so we sent the SEALS to get him. unfortunately he put up enough resistance they had to put him down. but being we actually have the body in tact we were able to do facial recognition as well as DNA and got the total match.

And yes his death and the way it was done means ALOT to nearly everyone. especially those that have served and those that had family or friends die in ANY OF HIS ATTACKS world wide.. not just 9/11

I got out of the military because the pay was low and the hours were looonnnggg.

Read thread title and all I could think of was "and". Military pay scales and plainly visible on the government websites, not sure why anyone would run a news story whose centerpiece is such mundane data.

Maybe you haven't heard of Richard Marcinko, aka Demo Dick, the founding father of SEAL Team Six and his book Rogue Warrior?

which is nearly all "fiction" even Dick will tell you that..
and alot has changed since he was drummed out of the service.. and he was not the "poster boy" for the Navy SEALs he would lead you to believe either.. I like him.. I like his books.. and I liked some of the stuff eh did for the teams.. but most of it was not good for the Navy as a whole.

Sounds like a good amount to me. With how much is spent on equipment, training and all the other things they do get. My guess the amount spent on them each year is a heck of a lot.

that's strait salary.

add COLA, Housing Allowance, healthcare and whatever else, and real salary is quite a bit greater. add to that other benefits like pension, non-governmental benefits of being military, etc.

i'm inclined to believe officers are dramatically overpaid, but that doesn't mean enlisted are underpaid.
