I just dont like ESPN on Legend level...you cant do anything and they can just run you over.

I dont mind that its much harder on offensive and defensive, but I cant stand how your players cant tackle anymore...its ridiculus

and pro level is too easy

Alright, I'll answer the question.
  • The online play is better. (Leagues, in particular.)
  • On the more typical difficulty levels, it plays really, really, REALLY well. (Sure, on the two easiest settings, things like that video will happen... But since I don't play on the easiest difficulty levels, it doesn't bother me.)
  • I've been playing Sega's version since NFL2k on the Dreamcast. Since it remains a phenominal game, I see no reason to choose otherwise. (If you like Madden better, more power to ya! But it's no skin off my nose.)
  • It was less than half the cost at the time of release.

Don't worry, this will no longer be an issue in the future as EA has told all competitors to abandon all hope as they now have exclusive rights to both the NFL and ESPN.

I too have been playing NFL 2K series since the Dreamcast and really never saw any reason to move away from any of the Sega sports titles to EA...

Get over it guys.ESPN nfl is over.

If they decide to make a football game it will be call like SEGA Football 2k6.With no license, no espn.No player etc....

But seriously, after looking at both video, i think the espn one suck more than madden.

I hope you realize that one video doesn't tell the whole story. Madden has it's issues too.

Did they ever fix the o-line shift/def stamina exploit? Last I heard, in online play, the defense doesn't lose stamina. So, if you pound the ball, run after run... The Defense's energy doesn't change. That's a huge flaw, and much worse than being able to excessively stiff arm on the easier difficulty levels.

Sure it does, but the issues are minor. Yes there are glitches (I'll address the specific one you brought up below), but they're not game-ruining glitches. If people use them, you report them and you don't play against them. At least if you get two people playing the game that are not purposely looking to cheat, you'll have a better game. With ESPN 2k5, that's not possible.

I'm not sure about online play (since I never go online), but I can tell you that the defense DEFINITELY wears down in normal play. I pound the ball pretty thoroughly (I have 2 good running backs, so I can keep it going), and I can tell you that if you keep that up and rule the time of posession, the runs come easier and easier towards the end of the game.

Now THIS is a sensible answer. I can at least understand if maybe there are things on the online version that you are really drawn to, and I can't really say much against it. However, I will go back to: if the gameplay is that bad, how can it be any fun online?

Gameplay isn't that bad, Ilmater. That's just an example of gameplay on the lower difficulty settings. Of course the tackling AI is going to be more forgiving. You just don't get the same thing on the more typical difficulty settings.

Btw... With the exception of the Roaf example, the other three are basically the same thing. A runner using the special moves to evade tackles. On the easier settings, this is typical. And even still, we have no idea how the settings are adjusted. He could have tackling turned all the way down, he could change Roaf's abilities, etc. (How he was able to pass to a tackle, I still don't really get.)

About the Madden exploit... They disabled Defensive stamina because people would shift their O-line over and over prior to the snap. Due to a glitch (or poor programming) the defense would lose stamina each time they shifted in response. By the time the ball is actually snapped, the defense is so worn down, that you could run at will. So, online play lacks all defensive stamina decline. This is not something the user can control.

I can't count how many hours I've played ESPN NFL2k5, both online and off. It really is an excellent game. Why you don't believe me, the many other 2k5 players, or even the reviewers, is beyond me.

The fact that it is such a good game, doesn't take anything away from Madden 2005. They can BOTH be good games, y'know. ;)

The fact that the MaddenWishlist page has had problems documented on it which haven't been fixed in the past three years says more about EA than Madden as a game.
I'd buy the stinkin game if they'd just fix what's broken before adding hot dog prices, cuz it certainly does do some things right.
ESPN had a knack for at least fixing the problems(granted, introducing new ones) from the previous year's game. Thats the main reason I supported them for all these years.
I support the better game. That includes offline and online gameplay and ESPN did it for me this year. We'll see if Madden can replace that for the next half decade.

Does ESPN have bugs like Madden does - i.e. certain plays that always work? Like a specific wide receiver patern, where wide receiver always gets open.

I was able to recreate the breaking tackles thing on the two easiest difficulty settings. On the more typical difficulty settings, they didn't work so overwhelmingly well.

The Willie Roaf thing... I have no idea how they did that. But after playing it this evening, and paying close attention to the relative speed of the players, I call shens. The players are all rated for their speed, and the game plays relative to those ratings.

So basically the only thing that video shows is that it's fairly easy to break/avoid tackles on the two easiest difficulty settings.
