Eric Cantor, Republicans in General, still in denial over Reagan raising taxes

This is becoming a farce, Reagan raised taxes 12 times during his presidency. Everything Republicans believe in is a lie. What next, pretending Reagan was some military hawk with balls of steel when he retreated from Lebanon after that Marine barracks got bombed?

It's cute how Republicans are so passionate about defending a lie they'll interrupt an interview shouting and screaming about it. Batshit crazy frothing at the mouths lunatics you all are.

Newt is the new Reagan, or so he says. The repugs have dug themselves so far in a hole there is no way they will defeat Obama in 2012.

Regan also DRAMATICALLY increased the size of government, despite somehow also being the poster boy for small-government. If ever there was an instance of image over substance, I'd say Regan might be it...

Actually the fact that liberals believe that he reduced taxes is more dangerous than conservatives believing that he did.

Reagan not only increased taxes, he was also the most pro-regulatory state post-FDR President.

The GOP needs to worship Warren G Harding because he's the only Republican President who reversed the damage from a big govt Democrat. The only bad thing I can think of right off that he did was sign the Fordney McCumber Act into law, but he was still the best President of the 20th Century hands down.

If elected, Dr. Paul will be only the second Republican President who I could rank as "good". The Democrats are historically the party of small govt.

Harding? Harding had the most corrupt Admin of the 20th century until Ronnie came along. The Teapot Dome scandal was just the tip of the iceberg.

Reagan raised taxes on more people than any president in history with the increase in SS taxes, even as top tier taxes were originally slashed & then adjusted somewhat upward. What it amounts to is that the tax burden was shifted down the scale, the opening salvo in the class warfare being waged from the top down ever since.

Are we really gonna argue 30 year old shit?

People like Cantor continuously refer to the myth & the legend of Reagan as if those things were real, when they never were. Hell, Ronnie was a semi-mythical creation even in office. So long as they attempt to engage in revisionist history, somebody will call them on it.

When those that still trot out "trickle down" and keep referring to their party as "The Party Of Reagan" - then hell yeah....

\or maybe you and like minded should quit following the myth and face the reality...
\\fun fact - Reagan would be called a RINO these days...

Anarchist considers incompetence a virtue in the executive... he is, after all, one of the forum's most zealous Paulists.

Over Christmas when all the news shows were doing their scientific explanations about Santa and how fits all those toys in his bag and how his sleigh can achieve the speed to deliver them and such I couldn't help but think of how similar it all was to the fairy tales Republicans believe in. Santa is real if you just believe hard enough.

What's strange to me is that he seems genuinely confused by the idea. I mean I get why he would try to perpetuate the lie that Reagan never raised taxes, but you would think that he would have a good answer thought up.

Okay, we'll concede the point when you guys concede that the Clinton surpluses had nothing to do with Clinton, and everything to do with Newt Gingrich.

They all raise taxes. Each and every year. That's what deficit spending is. It is a deferred tax, usually through forced inflation. God I wish people would stop sounding like partisan fools and get educated.

That would be obviously incorrect however, so why would you want us to do that? Clinton passed a large tax hike under the Democratic congress before Gingrich took power, and this contributed significant revenues going forward. Additionally, we saw a decade long economic boom that gave the government tons of extra cash. Newt Gingrich also contributed to the surpluses during those years, but to say that it had 'everything' to do with him would be clearly false.

So no, you don't get to have other people 'admit' something false just because you admit something true.

Okay well then, no. You can't have it. Taking my toys and going home.

Cantor’s office tried to clarify later that Dayspring’s remark “referred to the cumulative effect of Mr. Reagan’s tax policies, pointing out that he cut taxes more than he raised them, and that Mr. Reagan expressed regret making tax deals with Democrats because the spending cuts they agreed to never materialized.” But the point is, as historian Douglas Brinkley put it, “Ronald Reagan was never afraid to raise taxes. He knew that it was necessary at times. And so there’s a false mythology out there about Reagan as this conservative president who came in and just cut taxes and trimmed federal spending in a dramatic way. It didn’t happen that way. It’s false.” And this is a truth that today’s GOP just hasn’t been able to handle.

Is there any truth to the bolded accusation?

No, in other words, I'm tired of this stupid game.

Buncha cult minded reactionaries. The whole useless lot of em. With an ideaology out of a cracker Jack box wrapped up in a pretty white fascist bow. some folks should stick to NASCAR. Really?
