Very true. They probably were intentionally provoking a fight. The cats aren't smart enough to realize it's not the other cat nipping at its tail.

Actually, I've read somewhere (I think it was Scientific American) that corvids (crows, ravens, magpies, etc.) will cooperatively engage in harassment of other animals for what seems like entertainment.

They are also one of the only , only? (expect humans), animals known to not only use tools but modify their tools to the task at hand. There is an experiment where a crow has been seen bending a peiece of wire into a hook to get at some food in a cansiter.

i didn't see what was so special about it. though i've seen cats fight many times. Magpies are sometimes attracted to the sway of a cats tail, Their also well known for attacking cats in general.
Theres actually nothing here unusual other than there happens to be another cat that came into it at the same time the birds were antagonizing the cat...which magpies often do as they are very protective and cats often fight each other as well
