EPA low flush toilets

Is it just me, or are these things a terrible idea? I've got them in my house and you can't realistically use them without experiencing clogs pretty much everyday. Not to be too graphic, but even if you flush in between defecating and wiping it still can cause clogs. So what I don't get it how this is saving any water. To me it seems I have to flush a LOT more than I would if I had a regular toilet that wasn't low flow. Same kind of issue with the little piece of plastic that showerheads are required to have now. I had to remove that thing the first day I moved in. Seems sort of silly to me to use more water when the idea was to save more. Did they even test this idea?

i agree. i have the same problem and it totally pisses me off.

there will be somebody who will come in here and argue that 80% or some number of flushes are for urnine only so it saves water. From my expereience its pretty much a wash for the amount of times when me, my wife or my kids have to flush 3-4 times after taking a dump.

Oh, another thing. why are residental house the only place without urinals? When i build my house that is one thing my bathroom will have.

Please do. I have even done EBay searchs hoping to find someone selling the normal flow ones. We have a plunger by each toilet in our house because it came with these worthless things. At least you can fix the shower heads to work correctly.

Edit: One other thing they did in our house was stick a pressure valve on the main. I guess the theory with that is even if we remove the insert from the faucets and shower heads the flow is still limited. Fortunately it can be adjusted once the solder seal is removed. :D

Low flow toilets are the purest form of evil available in your hardware store.

I hate them with a passion, & will never have one in any house I own.

They get a bad reputation ("They smell bad.") because the only places people see them they get used hundreds of times daily by hundreds of different people. I'd imagine one properly maintained in a house would be fine (and have thought of having one as well).

Viper- I thought a new house was mandated to have them by the EPA. I guess unless you buy a used toilet right?

Is it actually illegal to do that? If not that sounds like a great business idea. I can't honestly believe the wealthy have these crappy toilets, but the middle class american like us don't know how to defeat the problem.

The early ones are not that good as they juts toke the old design and lowered the water amount, that will never work.

The newwer ones that ARE designed to be used on teh lower amount of water work just fine. But there are still some cheap ones still being made that use the old design.

This is a worthy topic for a rant thread. We need to figure out some way to overclock those things.

Wasn't there a King of the Hill episode on EXACTLY this same subject? :p
But yeah, that is pure BS. You should be able to choose between low and regular flow toilets and let your pocketbook/waterbill decide. If they truly save water/money, then it will reflect on your bill with the low flows installed. If not, then they have no business requiring them to be sold instead of the regulars. My grandparents house still has the high flows, which require only one flush. At mine, it usually takes 2, maybe three if I'm "in there a while". They really need to allow consumers to decide here.

I am waiting for the, uh, load-sensing toilets Popular Science talks about in their latest issue, in the BATHROOM OF THE FUTURE feature or whatever.

Yes, you still do urinate more than you sh!t. 3 flushes every time you poop is irrelevant when you pee much more often than that.

Family has used a total of 20,000 gallons of water in the last 3 months and only paid about 40 bucks. And NYC has the best water in the world, pure, fresh and great tasting. No hard/soft water issues at all. No need for low flush toilets or showerheads here.

(sewer charge is a an additional 50 or so every 3 months).

I'm no expert on toilets so I really can't refute what you are saying. However, my house is only about 8 months old, so I think it has the newer ones. They still are pretty terrible.

Edit- I just looked at my toilet in my half-bath was made in Nov of 2001. So is that an older version?

I don't think they have to be "mandated by the EPA" but you may not pass inspection if you have high-flow toilets if they even check for them.

You can buy high flow toilets if you're putting them in a business I believe. You just have to look around. People ARE smuggling them in from Canada too.

read an article about how urinials are becoming more popular in homes now. I'm going to put one in my house when I finally build, they're pretty easy to get.

The real absurdity here is that in a country as large and geographically diverse as the US someone decided on a 1 size fits all solution for water usage. I can understand local communities and states mandating low flush toilets if local water supply/waste treatment issues require it.

If you don't already know, you can usually hold the handle down to empty the tank, which gives almost the same effect as a high-flow toilet.

Don't know if this is true, but I've herd that there is actually a black market for the old 3.5 gal (or whatever it was) toilets, because people hate the new ones.

If you have a new one, they work just fine. If you have an older one from when they first came out, then you'll probably have problems.

I just bought a 1.6 gallon flusher from Menards a few weeks ago. It was an Elger (or Eljer) and only cost about $65 for the tank and the bowl. I've not had to get out the plunger even once.

The old toilet that I replaced what a 5 gallon flusher from 23 years ago or so and it would clog up all the damn time.

I blame the ultra green hippy tree huggers for this travesty enforced on the american public.
I hate low flow showers more than toilets... at least the sh!t isn't on you due to low flow.

we wanted to get the high volume/velocity industrial-type toilets
when we did our house remodel, but they were far too
expensive to be worth the 1-flush convenience.
