EPA low flush toilets

I agree with what FrankyJunior said-the designs have come way up (and the price way down) in the last few years. I have three low flows in my house-one is that fancy Japanese brand (Toto?) about a year old and works great. The other two are about five years old. The American Standard is decent, the no-name one is terrible.

I just put a new American Standard in a relative's house and it is great. If your toilets are really frustrating you I suggest taking a hundred bucks to Home Depot or Lowe and "upgrading." Its not worth the frustration to have a crappy crapper.

We estimated with our old 5 gallon toilet we probably flushed on average 10 tiems per day (probably high though). We get water bills every 3 months.
5 gallons per flush * 10 times per day * 90 days = 4500 gallons from flushing the toilet
1.6 gallons per flush * 10 per day * 90 days = 1440

So just from that we're saving 3000 gallons of water per water bill. Two water bills and the toilet has paid for itself.

Definitely worth it to me.

Humourist Dave Barry has done numerous articles about the subject, and has mentioned not only toilet smuggling from Mexico and Canada, but also individuals that salvage the old high-flow toilets from derelict buildings and junkyards, then restore them to good working order and sell them.

Why don't they make toliets with two flush modes, a 'urinate' and a 'defecate' mode. One is low-flow, the other is a tidal wave. Case closed.

That's exactly what they should do. I, like others, hate the one size fits all idea. Unless I'm mistaken, no water is saved at all in my area. River -> water treatment plant -> house -> toilet -> sewage treatment plant -> river.

Heh, good idea. I'm on the phone with the US Patent office right now.

I agree I had one but then I went to Canada and bought a high flow one and installed it myself... works great! We should go into business and start smuggling toilets from Canada

😀 LOL! My brother in law does just that! Hooks up a trailer and loads 'em up for his friends in the States.

I have seen a toliet with the too modes, that you all speak of, don't remember where though. I have read articles about importing toliets from Canada for personal use, thats legal, its not legal to resell them.
