How do you deal with envy?

Envy
A feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc.

Just in case you don't know what covetousness is, and I didn't.

Covetousness
1. Inordinately or wrongly desirous of wealth or possessions; greedy.

The question is how do YOU deal with envy??? You see people outdoors or with a girl and that must make you really envious.

Perhaps with mental discipline to alleviate its symptoms, and in time, the near-elimination that state of mind altogether?

Envy = a sin. its like greed, lust, murder, theft, lying, etc. Sin if you want to, however don't be envious of others who are better at it than you.

Envy is a tool that should be harnessed to motivate yourself towards self improvement. You envy that guy's Ferrari? Start working on that killer idea you've got that'll make you rich. Envy that dude's beautiful house? Put in that extra 5% at work and get noticed, get promoted. Envy your friend's awesome job? Put in a few more hours a week at the library and show him up your first year out of university.

TridenTBoy, I've seen some similarities between your posts here and there. Does this have something to do with a high school girl?

Envy is perfectly natural, it's a matter of dealing with it. Envy is no more a sin than birth or jacking off.

No, it does not.

Both, possibly. The definitions of both words can be confusing, and they seem to clash.

I don't see it that way, for me. I understand the logic for most people. If I envy the guy's Ferrai, it is because I cannot make the money he can (I do not have killer ideas). If I envy someone's beautiful house, it is for those same reasons. I envy that what I know I can't have at the moment I want it. I envy circumstance, I envy luck, and I envy experience.

I desire much greater wealth but not out of envy. Its out of fear that I'm vulnerable to financial ruin happening at some point without it. That fear drives me, but also burns me out at times.

Circumstance can't be controlled, luck is a fantasy and experience is gained. I don't own a Ferrari (I don't own a car), I don't own a mansion (I don't own a house), I don't have a great job. But I do my best to channel my envy positively. I'm certain that I'll have these things one day, and it won't come down to luck or circumstance. It will come down to shit loads of hard work, a lot of failure and learning and a matter of time. And if I fail? Fuck it, at least I tried.

That is exactly why I envy it... Experience can be circumstance. I am envying what I cannot have! That's why I do such. I don't envy something I know I can get.

Sounds admirable on the surface, but is probably more of a person's attitude when they don't have much at risk.

For me, failure is not an option.

See that's a fault of yourself. You don't strive to be anything. You don't need to be famous or create the next ipod. You can work the rest of your life making $20/hr or you can make your life better. You obviously don't want that. There's nothing wrong with that but some people want more in life.

Yeah I'm young and don't have a lot to lose. Probably not the best attitude when you've got kids and a mortgage.

invent new ways to harness solar or wind power. Study HTML and Java and design a website. Start a blog pretending to be a real cute chick who plays WoW to get more traffic, and when pressed for pics, scan in pics of a lesser known porn star.

how to deal with envy is to be happy with what you have.

if you're not happy about anything, then you should work on improving your life.

write down a list of things you like and don't like about yourself and just deal with or change the things you don't like.
