If you are going to rip on a company because of past quality control issues, you best be speaking from the first-person point of view or your opinion means very little.

"My friends VW is a POS, you should have seen it!" <----- NO.
"I saw a VW pulled over at the side of the freeway. Must be those electrical problems." <----- NO.
"I know a mechanic that works on nothing but domestics who says..." <----- NO.
"My neighbour has a VW and it's in the shop..." <-----NO.
"I read in Stuff magazine that the editors ashtray cover broke." <----- NO.

"One of my past VW's gave me trouble with..." <----- YES!

If you are going to run your mouth about how bad a car company is, please PLEASE have firsthand experience. Otherwise, kindly STFU and move along. :)

Only time my Passat has been in the shop in 64,000 miles for non routine stuff is for a check engine light and emissions workshop message that came on due to a vaccum hose recall that needed to be done.

Uh, a VW mechanic would be a far better authority than an individual owner since a mechanic would be able to see trends in many cars instead of just one example which is statistically invalid.

Gets under your skin when someone attacks your bread and butter, eh? :p

Every car has its up's and down's.

Typically german auto's are in the shop a lot.
To use one of your all encompassing quotes... My friend own's a 2000 jetta vr6, it's a nice car, but it did have more than it's fair share of electrical problems. Most of the ignition system was replaced within the first 2 years.

So, *shrug*, it all comes out in the wash.

I don't see what the problem with "My friend's VW..." is. If it was your friend and his VW was a pos I bet you would take heed to that and not buy it. It's the my friend's friend's shvt that's the problem.

Why? You don't need to put a piece of poop in a toilet to know what it is. If someone tells you that their car is piece of junk what are you going to call them a liar?

Except for one thing, I am the friend and my VW sucks so take heed and pass by the VW showroom onto greener pastures.

Perhaps, but I would also look at the bigger picture.

Every car company manufactures lemons once in a while. (except for Lexus :D)

This is not as simple as a piece of poop in the toilet though.

My point is, most people here jump on the hatewagon and talk out their ass.

Hehe.

VW isn't some mythical saint of a company (well, with the exception of their interiors).

If someone says "My Toyota/Honda is a POS that breaks down and has glitches all over the place," most people would look at you and say that you are a f*&king crackhead.
But if someone says the same thing about a VW, chances are they'll believe it...and from what I've experienced it's not the far from the truth (at least concerning little niggling glitches)

My family has 3 VWs which are all lemons. Once in a while happens an aweful lot.

You know i'm usually on your side when the bashing is warranted.

My problem is with people that talk out of their ass. You are not included in that bunch, as you generally have a clue and usually have hard facts to back up your statements. :)

Dude, you got it all wrong. Your opinion means sh!t if you own or owned a VW. Well informed individuals don't get a POS car in the first place. Does helping a friend fixing problems after problems with VW count?

... and that is a shame. :(

I think you may have told me before, but what were the year/model of those cars and the problems?

Well, I don't have any real first hand experience with VW's...I don't really fancy myself in a VW. But I've got plenty of friends who have them (Jetta, Beetle, Passat, Cabriolet). All of them have been plagued with some sort of electrical gremlins at one point or another. The worse being the Jetta who's front passenger side window just decided to stop working for some reason.

There's an 85 Jetta GL sitting in my driveway that can still be driven.... if I wanted to.

Of course, the power window regulators have been replaced (three of them), the power window switch was replaced (2 switches), the headliner has bubbles from air being stuck in the glue, the exhaust has been completely replaced at least once, the stove-pipe joint from the engine to the rest of the exhaust has been a source of noise and aggrevation since the late 80s, the headgasket had to be replaced once, the manual tranny was replaced once, a bubble/burst in the coolant return valve once exploded just minutes after arriving home from a HS football game that was an hour away, it kept droppling the stupid chrome inserts in the exterior door handle, the bottom of the car's carpet is soggy when it rains... has been since the early 90s, it's been broken into once (screwdriver to the doorhandle/trunk lock trick), the cv joints have all been replaced once, and, the kicker, the spedometer stopped working at 85,000 miles/early 90s and, despite being driven until 2002, it is still an 85,000 mile car.

All that aside, I currently drive a Memory Red 97 Jetta GLS... and still love the car. Only one window regulator, fake fog-light reflector insert replacement, and a passenger door lock mechanism (the latch part, not the handle part) is the only work I've really had to put into it.
