Absolute Moron.

You're the moron. You can't expect a cashier to know how to understand German or Japanese. This is America, and the language spoken and understood here is English.

I never said I expected a cashier to know several foreign languages.

Yes, this is America, so why don't you understand English?

😕

I understand English. You don't understand logic. Tourists from other countries can't order in foreign languages and expect to be served because the cashiers won't understand them.

Then why do you keep missing my point, I feel I've been quite clear on this.

1. They can say Cheesesteak without having to "learn English".
2. I never suggested that cashiers learn foreign languages.

Or do I need to repeat a 4th time.

You haven't been quite clear, but I doubt that things will improve with further input. The people have to know some English if they will order in English. The store owner is obviously not of the opinion that foreigners need to be fluent in English to order; he just doesn't intend to let them order in foreign languages. One need not have a perfect grasp of English to be conversing in English on a basic level, as you amply demonstrate.

You are welcome to eat that cookie as you pore over a decent logic textbook, or maybe one on communications. Here's another! :cookie:

It followed logically from your moronic statement. The title of the article should clue you in as to what's going on; the owner wants people to order in English. Go eat that cookie-- that's a good girl.

No, his points were made, and quite clearly if you'd bother to read.

You kept putting words in his mouth.

You seem to have a reading comprehension problem.

Go away, troll!

Unfortunately, I'm not a troll because you say so. Your behavior is closer to trolling than mine. You failed completely to understand the stupidity of feralkid calling the storekeeper a moron, but it's not my fault you didn't read the article or anything that came after.

Here's a tip: next time you call someone a moron, 1) have a point and 2) make it. Otherwise, you're inevitably going to look stupid. :cookie:

More comprehension issues are sadly in store for you, I'm afraid... responding to someone in a single thread never made anyone a stalker.

Be gone, arrogant psycho!

While I personally agree with the concept of everyone speaking the same language in a country, this is a very arrogant approach by any customer oriented business. It's downright insulting to customers. I know in all my travels I would have turned away from any store/restaurant with that attitude. If he really wants to help people speak english then maybe he should start classes for the ones who need them.
I agree that there is a certain degree of arrogance to his solution, but I can also relate to his worldview. As the grandson of Italian immigrants, the stories my grandparents told me of xenophobia and discrimination against all immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s was quite widespread and not very pleasant...even my parents and uncles can relate stories of being targeted by Irish and German gangs simply for being Italian.

Many cultures have immigrated to America since its inception, and all have managed to integrate into our society while maintaining elements of their own distinct cultures...when I hear leaders of Latino communities equate integration to cultural suicide, it somewhat frustrates me, as there is a certain arrogance as well to the mindset of immigrating to this country and having an expectation that it will provide services that cater to the nuances of your particular culture.
I understand your point completely about discrimination in the past and about assimilating into society while maintaining elements of your native culture. I am a first generation immigrant here and can relate to the (mis)concept of pandering to various cultures. But this case is different. this is a customer oriented service type business. I stand by my assertion that this is rude and insulting. The irony is that the owner himself is an immigrant who had to learn english.

In my previous job we typically had around 8-12 nationalities on board a ship with a total complement of around 25 and it was my job to enforce the official language of the ship (just happened to be English in that organization) and while that was important from a safety standpoint, I don't recall anyone being castigated for talking to the cook in any native language or socializing in their languages.

Yeah I might have overlooked that part which might help explain his attitude.

Anyways, today I went to his competitor and neighbor Pat's King of Steaks and had a very satisfying Cheese steak and French Fries.

There were TV cameras and what looked like a reporter at Geno's. I wonder if this was the story they were trying to get. Anyone watch the local NBC affiliate?

If Dunken Donuts had that policy there'd be nobody to work for them. Being one of those Coffee Assholes who likes his beverage a certain way it gives those who work the counters there fits. It doesn't bother me much unless they claim I said something I didn't. Of course they are use to the butchered English Bostonians speak, not the West Coast variety I speak so it's understandable.I can imagine speaking Brazilian and trying to understand Bostonian and English can be a daunting task

Nobody said anything about socializing in other languages. The signs merely tell customers to order in English (there's no castigation). There's a good reason for this-- the cashiers understand English. This is also the good reason for encouraging or requiring the use of English in our society; it's the language we have in common.

There's a more overwhelming need for a standard language than just safety. If people hadn't spoken a common language on your ship, they couldn't have all understood each other. It's very simple.

Good for them!! Has nothing to do with being Nazi!

I have traveled in many many foreign country where if you didnt speak the language you were SOL!!

Which countries were they?

I don't know what countries JEDIYoda might have traveled to (and I can't imagine him dealing with "foreigners" very well...), but in my experience, almost everywhere you go you can get by without knowing too much of the local language. I spent a week in Italy without even knowing how to ask where the bathroom was (it was in my little book, but I didn't have to use the phrase once). Everyone spoke at least enough English for me to get by, even in some of the more out of the way places like a little hole in the wall place in Naples. And that's Italy, a country that isn't quite on par with the US diversity-wise.

Given that, it seems like we're being a bunch of jackasses about the issue. Yeah, it would be nice if people all spoke English, but the whole common wisdom about how we're the only country that lets you get away with not knowing the language is a bunch of bull...at least as far as English is concerned.

Well put. Actually I was calling out JEDIYoda, as I have a hard time believing he speaks several foreign languages; he can't even punctuate his English!

Its flattering that what I say would concern you enough to post something ignorant about calling me out!! lolol

feralkid call me out all you want! English is my 4th language not my primary language!
Also this is the internet its not a frekin doctrinal thesis where everything needs to be puntuated perfectly!
You want to speak polish or Russian or Czech feel free to PM me in any of those languages and we can have a conversation..
Since I have been told its against the rules of these forums I would have posted this in one of those 3 languages.
There are many places in slavic countries especially out in the rural areas where you truly
are SOL if you speak no english.

You go to the bigger or even moderately sized cities and YES people will try to help you.
YES english is now being taught and has been taught for some time now in the schools instead of Russian as when I was growing up!

But in the rural areas of many countries...especisally your slavic countries you are still SOL.
People will still try to help you...especially if you hold your private parts and jump up and down its pretty obvious what your trying to say.

Anybody can say they went on a trip to Europe to see the sights.
Been there and done that.
You are correct about Italy and a few of its neighbors but once you hit the country alot of the time you really are SOL!!

Its nice to be called out....but grow up. I have traveled extensively through Europe!
Germany, Romania, Hangary, Russia, Ukraine,Czech Rep and France and Poland.

But hey i don`t know ******...so go figure!
Just becuase you didn`t have a hard time communicating in Italy doesn`t mean that your experiences hold true throughout all of Europe!

No need to throw a thrombo.

Yes, I meant to call you out to see if you actually spoke several foreign languages.

I guess you know some, and that is quite admirable; but not so many as you would lead us to believe. I figured you were exagerating to make your point, and was correct. What about that makes me ignorant?

I see you've diluted your original statement from most of the world to "many place in slavic countries" why didn't you say that in the first place? You would have received little argument from anyone, I'm sure.

I don't know what you are referring to regarding Italy, as I never mentioned it in my post.

What I said dtill holds true for most of the world....
You are truly dillusional.. I can understand tourist spots that have alot of english speaking tourists..
But for the most part my original statement holds true.

For everything I say anybody can find an exception thats just the way life is....

Here`s a good example -- you have to go to the bathroom you don`t know a word of the local language so you see somebody who is local and you grab your crotch and start jumping up and down...who in there right mind is NOT going to know you have to go wee wee? If you know anything about Italy which I am assuming you do then you know there are countries where generally speaking even as a tourist from japan or some where else you can get along well becuase the American tourist industry has flooded some counties with tourists.

You truthfully cannot take what limited experiences you have had in countries where Americans are tolerated and sometimes even liked and apply your expieriences to all countries! I could show you many countries that are not slavic where once you get out of the tourist traps you are SOl if you want to speak english.

But you know human nature no matter where you go most of the time is to try to be helpful.

Im out of this thread.

What I don't get is what court action would they pursue? Can a private owner of a private establishment not dictate the terms of service?

You know the old sign, "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason."

You're correct, as long as the terms don't infringe on anyone's rights. Based on the information in the article, they have no case whatsoever. I'd be very surprised if it went to trial.

That and the freedom fries means I won't be stopping by there anytime soon. Pats steaks are just as good - and he has tables & chairs.

Geno's is better than Pat's. Tony Luke's is better (way better) then either of them.

That being said - the owner of Geno's is a moron. Support for Daniel Faulkner ( and his widowed wife) - that was great. This is just a dumb, really dumb stunt on his part. He completely misread the attitude of that neighborhood and the city in general.

Now that I know that he is a bigoted idiot - I won't be going back. I'll be content with Pat's.

It's a private business, the owner can and should be able to do as he pleases.
And I agree, if you live in a foreign country, you should make the effort to learn the language.
I'm in Japan. 90%+ of middle easterners, chinese, koreans, vietnamese, indains, "etc", who live in japan can speak Japanese. Conversely, 90%+ of Americans, Canadians, Australians, and Brits who live in Japan can hardly string 2 sentences of Japanese together, if that. Some even brag about how they've lived here for so long without learning Japanese. Pisses me off how they think they deserve special treatment (and I'll say it also pisses me off that brainwashed Japanese seem to think these Westerners DO deserve special treatment).
