I stand by my assertion that this is rude and insulting. The irony is that the owner himself is an immigrant who had to learn english.

In my previous job we typically had around 8-12 nationalities on board a ship with a total complement of around 25 and it was my job to enforce the official language of the ship (just happened to be English in that organization) and while that was important from a safety standpoint, I don't recall anyone being castigated for talking to the cook in any native language or socializing in their languages.

Nobody said anything about socializing in other languages. The signs merely tell customers to order in English (there's no castigation). There's a good reason for this-- the cashiers understand English. This is also the good reason for encouraging or requiring the use of English in our society; it's the language we have in common.

There's a more overwhelming need for a standard language than just safety. If people hadn't spoken a common language on your ship, they couldn't have all understood each other. It's very simple.

I spent a week in Italy without even knowing how to ask where the bathroom was (it was in my little book, but I didn't have to use the phrase once). Everyone spoke at least enough English for me to get by, even in some of the more out of the way places like a little hole in the wall place in Naples. And that's Italy, a country that isn't quite on par with the US diversity-wise.

Given that, it seems like we're being a bunch of jackasses about the issue. Yeah, it would be nice if people all spoke English, but the whole common wisdom about how we're the only country that lets you get away with not knowing the language is a bunch of bull...at least as far as English is concerned.

If you know anything about Italy which I am assuming you do then you know there are countries where generally speaking even as a tourist from japan or some where else you can get along well becuase the American tourist industry has flooded some counties with tourists.

You truthfully cannot take what limited experiences you have had in countries where Americans are tolerated and sometimes even liked and apply your expieriences to all countries! I could show you many countries that are not slavic where once you get out of the tourist traps you are SOl if you want to speak english.

But you know human nature no matter where you go most of the time is to try to be helpful.

You're correct, as long as the terms don't infringe on anyone's rights. Based on the information in the article, they have no case whatsoever. I'd be very surprised if it went to trial.

Geno's is better than Pat's. Tony Luke's is better (way better) then either of them.

I spent a week in Italy without even knowing how to ask where the bathroom was (it was in my little book, but I didn't have to use the phrase once). Everyone spoke at least enough English for me to get by, even in some of the more out of the way places like a little hole in the wall place in Naples. And that's Italy, a country that isn't quite on par with the US diversity-wise.

If you know anything about Italy which I am assuming you do then you know there are countries where generally speaking even as a tourist from japan or some where else you can get along well becuase the American tourist industry has flooded some counties with tourists.

You truthfully cannot take what limited experiences you have had in countries where Americans are tolerated and sometimes even liked and apply your expieriences to all countries! I could show you many countries that are not slavic where once you get out of the tourist traps you are SOl if you want to speak english.

But you know human nature no matter where you go most of the time is to try to be helpful.

It's a private business, the owner can and should be able to do as he pleases.
And I agree, if you live in a foreign country, you should make the effort to learn the language.
I'm in Japan. 90%+ of middle easterners, chinese, koreans, vietnamese, indains, "etc", who live in japan can speak Japanese. Conversely, 90%+ of Americans, Canadians, Australians, and Brits who live in Japan can hardly string 2 sentences of Japanese together, if that. Some even brag about how they've lived here for so long without learning Japanese. Pisses me off how they think they deserve special treatment (and I'll say it also pisses me off that brainwashed Japanese seem to think these Westerners DO deserve special treatment).
