forms are in chinese... tagalog even. at least it is where i live, and at least for the forms i've seen. i really don't know about mexicans, i only have experience with the asian community (not too many mexicans in seattle). and yes, i insist we make public services accessibile to these people.
OK, I'm gonna try this once more.
How many languages should the government have to print forms in?
i don't see how a test is a form. a form is something you fill out to apply for something... a test is... well.. a test of your knowledge of a subject.
Whatever you choose to call it, it is a printed document that must be printed in multiple languages.

Unless you are born here or have become a citizen you aren't entitled to any benefits from our government just because you live here. Hell I have a problem with people that were born here and want to suck of the government's tit when they are able to work. In my opinion the only thing you are entitled to when you are born is that some day you will die. That's another thread though.....

The bottom line is this. Live here and expect to be treated like everyone else and have the same access to government programs, etc? Then learn the language.

Thats a pretty discriminating statement. Legal immigrants also contributes to this country, and they have their rights as well. You're saying thats since they're not a citizen, it is allright for the government just to tax them to death and give nothing in return ?

Well in my world we wouldn't be handing out benefits to anyone unless they can't work because of some REAL disability. As for the legal immigrants? I just simply didn't think about them in my statement. Stupid mistake on my part. They should be lumped in with the natural born and naturalized citizens. Assuming of course that they can read/speak the langauge and actually do the paperwork as needed.

I don't see why the gov't has a responsibility to all these people who speak languages other than English. Let's face it, English is the de facto national language. I wouldn't go to France or Japan and expect them to print everything in English for me. I know a few immigrants, and they all can speak English. It's only the lazy who want everyone to change for them.

yea or else shinerburke will prevent you from getting what you're entitled to.

why should they have to learn english?
One more time....

Because they live here and English is and has always been the national language even if it isn't officially codified anywhere. If they come here and expect to work and make a living then it is reasonable to expect them to learn the language so that they can contribute to society. If they choose to be lazy and not learn the language then they are limiting themselves to low end jobs and placing an undo burden on taxpayers who have to pay for various govermental forms, etc... to be printed in multi languages.

Bilingual government forms are a necessity,
No they aren't. Why should we have to print forms in multiple languages? IF people want to live here and benefit from living in this country then they need to learn the language. Think about it for a second. Do you REALLY want someone who took their driving test in Spanish out on the roads trying to read English signs?
This may be hard to believe, but immigrants don't learn new languages immediately. How is a new immigrant from El Salvadore supposed to fill out green card forms without knowledge of English?

it's not a question of how many languages. it is a question of what is right and what is wrong. if somebody is entitled to benefits, then the government should not institute anything that will prevent the benefit from being acquired. this is why we have absentee ballots. i mean come on, you don't think that costs money? you don't think most of the people that use that are lazy? of course they are, but there are people, that for whatever reason, can not make it out of their house to vote. the government allows people to vote via absentee ballot because nothing should get in the way of their right to vote.

doesn't mean a thing, your opinion.

nobody is saying that we have to give these people jobs. that's their own responsiblity. that's a completely separate issue.

as for low end jobs... somebody has to take them. and it sure as hell ain't gonna be me.

placing an undo burden on taxpayers who have to pay for various govermental forms, etc... to be printed in multi languages.

i'm not going to let a fraction of a penny off my paycheck get in the way of allowing people get what they are legally entitled to. i'm not *that* poor.

One must be a citizen to vote.
What benefits are non-citizens entitled to?

Just emailed my representatives of GA about considering this......Dalton, GA is literally overrun with illegal Mexicans. They run the carpet factories down here. The only reason they turn the other cheek is because the businesses benifit from the illegals down here.....but if they are going to be here at least I would like to hear them speak at least a little bit of english.

You are fugging dense. America IS immigration. We do owe it to immigrants to make it so they can read forms required to become legal workers and citizens. Can you really not spare the few dollars?

No matter how you slice it, no matter what rhetoric you come up with about America being only for English descendents, it comes down to "beautiful ray of sunshine go home!"

Oooooo, I like this quote

"And while you bring all countries with you, you come with a purpose of leaving all other countries behind you--bringing what is best of their spirit, but not looking over your shoulders and seeking to perpetuate what you intended to leave behind in them."

--Woodrow Wilson, comments to new citizens, 1915

OK, we'll print all government forms in Spanish.
Now, how about Greek, Chinese, Italian, Korean, Indic, French, German, Polish, Swahili, Slavic, Russian, Yiddish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hungarian, Japanese, Creole, Vietnamese, Swedish, Dutch and Croatian?
BTW, these are only a few of the languages spoken in one Borough of NY City - Queens.

well, if there are people that *only* know one of those languages....
