Wow so many replies. I thought about getting an engagement ring from Tiffany but people are always bashing other people for doing that not sure why.

What is the difference between all of those online retailers? The problem I have with buying something like online is I can't see it before I buy it.

Tiffany is much more money for nothing but the brand... and how can you even tell what brand a ring is when it's worn?

The online retailers sell high quality diamonds that are graded by reputable companies... if you know what a GIA certified 1.0 carat F VS1 ideal cut diamond looks like, (hint: go to a store and look) that's what you'll get.

The woman gets to brag about where the ring came from. Women are brand whores, that's why they buy $1000 purses and $500 shoes.

I went with a Tiffany style setting. Simple six-prong in platinum. The same ring from Tiffany would have been 30% or so more.

If you need to see the diamond in person before getting it set, many of the more reputable online places will ship you the loose diamond (after paying for it of course). Just gotta pay return shipping + insurance. I went sight unseen because I saw Idealscope image, AGS lab report, magnified photos and had the head jeweler look it over to make sure it was a sparkly diamond. If going with a round, you can also run the specs through the HCA calculator http://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca. Brian Gavin's reputation is top notch as well.

I got my wife hers from a small jewelry store. I bought a loose diamond and had them mount it on a ring they had in stock. This allowed me to pick a higher quality stone by hand-selecting it. I can't stand the concept of big box jewelry stores offering sub-par stones pre-mounted...

The stone I bought is laser inscribed on the girdle by GIA so the stone actually has a number on it you can see if you zoom in enough.

When they mounted the stone, they didn't center it between the prongs so I had them remount the stone so we could read it.... I think the jeweler was annoyed at the request, but he agreed that it is something I paid for by getting a certified stone. (that's not a picture of the stone my wife has...just an example)

Best idea is to get a ring made out of some volatile radioactive material. That way you ensure she passes away by the time she gets old and ugly so you can marry a fresh new 20-year-old.

One thing I like about shane co is their warranty. What are some good stores to go look at? After than the usual? Im kinda torn between online and shane co :/

You'd want it to be 22/22K actually. That's a funky gold standard. The first number is what the outer layer is certified to be and the latter what the gold will yield if melted down.

I'm located in California in the easy bay.

Derco Fine Jewelers in San Francisco.
Taylor & Jacobson in Walnut Creek.
Joe Escobar Diamonds in Campbell.
Jewelry Exchange in Redwood City for loose diamonds only.

Go in knowing what you're looking for (what parameters you're looking at for the four c's).. have prices from a couple online places in your head.

Don't forget the 5th, and some say, the most important C: Cost! (was the half-joke told to me by the robins brothers sales guy)

Know what you want to spend, and I would bring a friend or cousin of hers if they're available. I got indispensable design advice for the cost of a simple lunch for 3. Though, my wife started getting suspicious: Why do you know exactly what's going on with Christina these days?

Maybe OP will get lucky and his GF will want a solitaire.

She'll get the diamonds somewhere. Fiance has a solitaire but she wants an eternity band for the wedding band. Probably going with Blue Nile as they have a quick/easy return policy. If i were to go through BGD or Whiteflash, it's considered custom and not returnable.
