Engagement rings

I went to several local jewelry stores with the fiancee and she picked out one she liked (ended up being basically the cheapest we looked at as well). Obviously, this strategy involves popping the question pre-ring, so it's not for traditionalists. But I'd echo the idea of not spending a lot of money on an engagement ring. My wife opted for the cheap engagement ring but her family plopped down a good amount of money to make a really elegant ring for the actual wedding using stones that had belonged to her grandmother.

Local jewelry store. Don't, don't, don't spend a lot of money. It's a ring.

Why not? If it's what you both want to do, fuck it and spend the money.

Online is the way to go too IMO, regardless of price point. Brian Gavin, whiteflash, blue Nile, etc. if you're gonna buy one why not get the most for your money.

Keep an eye in the FS/FT forum as there may or may not be a user on here that brought in a family and may or may not be looking to sell off an engagement ring in the near or not-so-near future.

An engagement ring is surely something that gets taken off once you're married (my point being, what's the point in spending a lot on it), unless she does what some do by wearing both rings once she's married.

I never understood spending a lot of money on an engagement ring, when it will shortly be replaced by a wedding ring.

My wife's great aunt gave my wife her engagement ring. I could ask the aunt if she has another one but I think she has a touch of being dead for several decades. But I'll ask anyway.

Arco. $0.99 bag of Funyuns. Used one as the engagement ring. Spontaneity is romantic, right? Right???

The wedding ring I bought is *slightly* nicer.

I spent $13,200 on the engagement ring and around $5000 on the wedding ring. Both from Tiffany's. She wore the engagement ring for about six months and the wedding ring for about eight months. The fact that I could lord over her how little she wore those rings: priceless.

I got mine from Tiffany as well, didn't spend that much though. 😛

Engagement rings are different than wedding rings? I thought she was presented with the same ring at the wedding...

They are two different things. Engagement has a big rock, wedding is just a band. Typically.

I got it from a particular jeweler, but I'll just say Etsy.

Etsy is awesome. I have no jewelry selection skills IRL, so I always look for something geeky-cool for presents. For Christmas this past year, I got my wife a really cool Doctor Who necklace from an Etsy seller. Great prices too!

Our engagement & wedding rings hook together. The engagement ring is a single band with the rock, then the wedding portion snaps in and has smaller diamonds & two extra bands. Looks nice.

Pro tip: let her pick it out. That is, if it's not going to be a surprise. That she's happy with it because it was her decision. Worked for me 😉
