War brings out creativity, but a lot of resources go into destructive creativity. Space exploration is 100% beneficial creativity.

So all we need to do is convince the republicans that planet XYZ is a threat to jesus. We'll be all over that shit in no time.

other sites don't call for exotic material just energy in the amount of what you would get you turned 500kg of matter into energy. The energy needed could come from anywhere I would think, not any particular source. Think they just use mass for energy due to the size of the number (500kg = 4.5e19 joules).

I don't think these pop sci sites really know what they are talking about. and 4.5e19 joules is like 10 thousand megatons bombs.

I'm thinking... it might be possible for us to warp space without exotic matter or much energy. A finely tuned and synchronized electromagnetic field comes to mind. Encase the ship in layers of superconducting and superinsulating materials...

Mass warps space/time. For electromagnetic fields you would need another field to push off. There's some options there but you are talking strictly sub light speed.

The "warp drive" they are talking about, I believe is actually based on inflation of space/time that looks to have happened right after the big bang.

If only it were as simple as anti-matter.

It's actually stuff that effectively has negative mass and thus produces negative energy.
But yes, negative energy has actually been observed, not sure about negative mass though.

You ever fill a balloon with helium? It's physics, duh!

Yes, that was sarcastic.

I'm saying we may be able to manipulate "mass" by using properties of matter itself. EM is 1 of 4 fundamental interactions. Imagine generating warp fields by method of "Boson Inhibition". 😱

Really? Conflict and warfare has brought and spurred the most human development. Without it the human race would be living like rainforest tribesman.

Look at WWII, we go from using biplanes to jet fighters in less than a decade. If we had more big, global wars we'd be further ahead than we are now. Fighting cavepeople is the problem, we just develop ways to kill more cavepeople rather than advancing a technology and creating a counter technology for it.

The jet and the rocket and numerous technologies would have been developed anyway, military $$$ input sped them along. Even if WWII didn't happen I still think we would flying around in jet powered planes..To OP, interesting thread, we did go from Orville Wright lunar touch down in less than 75 years so who knows if they can pull it off one day..
