Enermax "Whisper" PSU definitely not whispering!

I just purchased an Enermax EG365P-VE with Fan Monitoring today I was expecting almost complete silence, but it seems as if the noise level is almost exactly the same as my old 300 Watt Powerman PSU. Is it possible that I my case can amplify noise? I've got an InWin Q-500 which has lots of little ventilation holes and things. I know that it's the PSU that's being noisy - I have a quiet HSF, and no case fans on at the moment.

I did try hooking up only the motherboard, and the PSU was very quiet then. However, now that everything else is plugged in the fans are going like crazy, and making plenty of noise.

Any ideas for dampening the sound? I'd rather not go the Dynamat-type route, if it's at all possible.

Being that you have no case fans that is probably what is causing it. The hotter your case temp gets the faster the fans on that Enermax are going to spin. Whats the RPM on it? Mine was at 1600-1800 and it was dead silent, tho I moded it to run them at full speed all the time.

johneetrash: My HSF is a Taisol CEK93302 or something. It's just one step up from the bottom of their line.

Dulanic: Damn, mine is running at 3200-3300 RPM! I guess maybe that's what's causing the noise?

Open up your case to simulate the lowest possible temp you will be able to achieve with more cooling, and see if the noise level is acceptable at that point. If it is, then invest in more internal cooling fans.

If your case is constructed right, an open case will raise temps by like 5C (dead spots etc.) My case moves under 100cfm in and under 100cfm out, but it is like 1C over ambient.

Someone with a Enermax wisper and a DDR board, can you please post your voltages accoringto MotherBoard Monitor for me? I think mine is crapin out.

also make sure that the ps is screwed down real tightly. It might help to put something, like a silcon epoxy, wherever metal touches metal to cut down on vibrations.

I have to agree here, got the same model and it's just plain louder than my old enlight with it's fixed speed fan. Of course there was only 1 fan in there...but it wasn't called whisper either.

From a cold boot, it's beautiful, fans spinning, but unheard...then within a few minutes, bammo, they're spinning up. System temp's being reported in the low 80's (F), to me that should say the PS fans are spinning more than fast enough. But with the CPU right underneath there's no chance of them ever running slow. Tempted to relocate the sensors and see just how much warmer the case is with them running slow.

I agree... the fans are not a whisper. I may pick up a quietpc PSU....

How much trouble do you think it'd cause if you tried to put a PSU in your baggage and fly out of England with one? ;)

Hm, relocating the sensor might be a good idea. The sensor is obviously paranoid, since it never causes the fan to slow down. I'm a little antsy about opening the power supply though - there must be some other way to slow these fans down.

u're not gonna get it any quieter unless your case's ambient temperature is relatively low...

u should've bought the suggested quietPC psu or this one.

otherwise, u could disconnect the intake fan on the underside of your psu and just have the one exhaust fan running.

Have there been any side by side comparisons of these three power supplies (Enermax, QuietPC, and PC Power and Cooling)? Are there any especially suggestable / quiet conscious review sites we could ask to run a test?

Also bear in mind that the Powerman is a pretty quiet PSu to begin with. I can barely hear mine

Here's what I did to quiet the Enermax whisper. Remove both 2 pin fans+grills. Install 1 80mm Panaflo/Adda fan with a 3pin extension and no grill. I'm glad the all the hype on these overrated Enermaxs is finally starting to die down. The 351 is the best looking and performing ps I've owned but unfortunately it was also the loudest.

That's exactly what I've been trying to tell people. Whisper, it sure doesn't. So far the only PS that has any juice that is decent in terms of sound is the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 400W. They bend you over on the price though. No matter, wouldn't part with it and my ears thank me.
