With the warm weather approaching the 2009 season for endurance sporting events is about to begin. There appear to be several athletes in the AT H&F forum, so Skoorb and I were thinking that it might be fun for us all to post up our scheduled events. Who knows, this could be a vehicle for some AT meet-ups. Here's my schedule so far this year:

4/25/09 - Great Heron Road Race. This is a 5K race and my first race ever. My son is running this one with me. Geneva, NY

5/3/09 - MedVed Madness Trail Run. This is a 15 mile trail race, I'm very excited about this one. Honeoye Falls, NY

8/2/09 - Lyme Sprint Triathlon. My first triathlon. I'm excited about this race, too! Chaumont, NY

10/4/09 - Wineglass Marathon. The Wineglass Marathon. My first marathon and I'm nervous as hell about this one. Bath, NY

I'm adding a few more races yet, at least one Olympic distance triathlon, maybe a half-iron triathlon depending on how I do on that trail race.

So, let's see what you guys are doing this year. Maybe I'll see some of you out there.

May 16th - Twisted Ankle Half Marathon, Summerville, GA
July 12th - Utica Boilermaker 15K
September 13th - Rochester Half Marathon
September 27th - Falling Leaves 14K
October 25th - Marine Corps Marathon

Wineglass is a good choice for your first marathon. It's a great course and good for a first marathon I think (although it might be nice to have a lot more people to try to run with). I have only done the relay but two of my friends ran it as their first marathon and said it was great. Good luck and have fun racing this year!! Let us know how it all goes!

15 Feb - IMS Arizona Marathon
7 March - Litchfield Park 10K
April - Blank
2 May - Whiskey Row Marathon. Maybe, haven't secured a personal day yet for the drive.
June - Too Hot
July - Too Hot
August - Too Hot
September - Not sure
October - Cactus ChaCha 7mi
14 November - Just Another Madd Dog 50K
Thanksgiving - Thanksgiving Day Classic 10mi
6 December - Rock and Roll Las Vegas, Maybe, again, need to secure time off.

In 2010, my schedule will probably be more aggressive with a few more ultras if my work schedule permits. I'm looking at participating in the Ragnar Relay De Sol, the Man Vs Horse ultra, and the Pemberton Trail 50K.

Depending on how things go, I will do some sprint triathlons in the Rochester area this year and maybe a couple of 5ks. I have had, the last couple of years, some thoughts about doing the Highlander, but I won't be in the area this September then, so that's out.

The only endurance race that I'm interested in would be one of the stair climbs in Chicago. Maybe I'll start training for it now, but I need to find a good place with stairs first. I used to train stairs like crazy, but that was a long time ago.

I think Men's Health magazine has an urban athlon in Chicago every year. That would be fun to participate in.

Cowtown - 2/28/09 - full marathon
Big D - early April - 1/2 Marathon (helping a friend train for OKC, this will be a warm-up/test)
OKC Marathon - late April - full Marathon

I haven't really planned much after that, other than White Rock in December - full. I know I'll do a few more halves, but don't know about full marathons. I do plan on taking a little time off after OKC, then starting to train at a faster full marathon pace.

July 4th - Peachtree Road Race 10K

November 14th - Richmond Marathon

I'll do a few 10K's as well, but these are the only two that I really want to do well in.

I'm just doing some 5ks. My first is Feb 28 - Freezefest. The rest will be scheduled whenever I can fit one in around tennis tournaments.

Planning on doing more races this year (>30) than last year (22).
I want to do some trail runs and add those into the mix.

Mostly a 5K runner, with no current plans on doing anything over 10 Miles.
I am contemplating a half marathon but have not committed to the idea yet.

Have already done:

Jan 25, 2009 - Penguin Run (5K) (19:28)
Feb 1, 2009 - Mr. Eds Superbowl Warm Up (5K) (20:03)
Feb 14, 2009 - Lockport Y-10 (10 Mile Race) (1:09:51)
Feb 22, 2009 - Polar Bear Run (5K) (19:50)
Mar 14, 2009 - Bengal Run (5K) (19:11)
Mar 28, 2009 - Chillin? with Jesus 5K Run (19:07)
Apr 25, 2009 - Envirun (5K) (19:30) (That was a windy day, around 30-35 mph head winds)
Apr 26, 2009 - Stomp Out Stigma Run/Walk (5K) (18:56)

Planning/Comtemplating on Running:

May 9, 2009 - Allegany Adventure Runs (6K)
May 16, 2009 - River Run (5K)
May 24, 2009 - Buffalo Half Marathon (Not sure about this one)
May 30, 2009 - Salmon Run (5K)
Jun 6, 2009 - Woods Walk & Trail Run (10K)
Jun 14, 2009 - Jog for the Jake (5K)
Jun 19, 2009 - St. Gregory The Great Great Race (5K)
Jun 21, 2009 - Jog for the Jake (5K)
Jun 24, 2009 - Run in the Mist (5K)
Jul 11, 2009 - Runnin' With Jesus Niagara, The Padre's Cup (5K) (Maybe)
Jul 13, 2009 - Loughran's Alumni Run (5K)
Jul 22, 2009 - Runnin' with Jesus (5K)
Jul 29, 2009 - Ronald McDonald House (5K)
Aug 1, 2009 - Fair Days 3-Mile Race
Aug 3, 2009 - "The Mud Run" European Style Cross-Country Run (6K)
Aug 9, 2009 - Ultra 10-Mile Trail Run
Aug 19, 2009 - Moonlight Run (5K)
Sep 2, 2009 - Harvest Moon Run (5K)
Sep 5, 2009 - 8 in the Rough Trail Run (8 Miles)
Sep 19, 2009 - Lebro's Fall Classic (5K)
Sep 26, 2009 - Linda Yalem Safety Run (5K)
Oct 4, 2009 - Boy Scouts of America Promise Run (5K)????
Oct 17, 2009 - Dr. Richard T. Sarkin Memorial 5K
Oct 24, 2009 - 12th Annual Flexcare Jack O?Lantern Fall Classic 5K (Maybe)
Nov 14, 2009 - Lindsay's Legacy Run (5K)
Nov 21, 2009 - Trottin' With Jesus (5K)
Nov 26, 2009 - YMCA Turkey Trot (8K)
Dec 5, 2009 - Reindeer Run (5K)
Dec 12, 2009 - The Snowball Run for the Morlock Foundation, Inc. (5K)

That pretty much will round out the year. There are usually 2 factors that stop me from doing all the races that I want to do: Family and $$$$$. Races do cost money and its getting more difficult to expense these out. I will try though.

Jesus that is a lot of 5K's! I haven't done one in almost a year...just isn't enough of a challenge/workout I guess. Sure I'm nowhere near the top in terms of speed and can get better, but I barely break a sweat running 3 miles nowadays.

I'm riding La Marmotte in July.
174 km, 82 km of climbing, 4 of the biggest and most famous cols.

I also like mountaineering so I'm probably going back to Mnt Elbrus in Russia this summer and a first time climb of Aconcagua in Argentina later this year

Hey man, you should check out the Jenny Kuzma Memorial 5K in Bergen in August. My friend is the race director and they have the best pizza in the world afterward. It's a pretty decent course too; flat and fast.

As much as I would like to, it is a little bit out of my travel range for a 5K. Did not say I will not do it, but I would have to really want to do this race. I live in North Tonanwanda and try to stay locally (within 30 miles) if at all possible. I do like races with a good post race food though. This race would be around 60 miles for me to get to.

Ick, that is pretty far. I didn't realize Bergen was that far from Tonawanda. If you do happen to be out that way, it is a great race though. Stacked field (like, 14:30 guys) and the aforementioned greatest pizza in the world. By the way, I might do some of the races you mentioned. I ran the Jack O'Lantern 5K last year (awesome race; love running next to the falls) and did the Jog for the Jake the year before (The Doc beat me; damn fast 50-year-olds!!!). I will definitely be doing the Turkey Trot too. I think that has become a staple race for me.

Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati May 3rd.

This will be my first marathon.

Nothing else planned after that. After the marathon I plan on hitting the gym and bulking up a little bit, and working on my hops. Gonna dunk this summer :D For cardio I'll be playing a lot of sports; basketball, racquetball, and soccer. With the occasional frisbee game (I love being in great shape and playing frisbee :D)

Oh, I confirmed time off for Whiskey Row, so I will definitely be doing that. I've also got a reservation at the Luxor in Vega for the RNR Las Vegas Marathon, but haven't registered for the run yet. Need time off secured first.

We need some clarification here as to what qualifies as an endurance event. A 5K is not an endurance event.

I would say any triathlon/duathlon/Xterra, long distance running, and biking races. Swim meets. Trail running and adventure racing (both things I'm looking into heavily rather than triathlons...).

As to whether or not a 5K race is an endurance race, I would say that it should be evaluated on a case by case basis. For a beginner (less than a year or 2 of running experience) 5K is quite the feat. For a lifelong runner, not so much.

For example, the 5K race my son and I are doing later this month is NOT a test of our endurance, but it is a speed check and a way for us to get used to racing. We have never raced competitively so it's an experience builder for us. The 15 miler the following weekend will be a huge effort though.
