Social security is stealing from the young to give to the poor. It is robbing the younger generations especially since there will be nothing left for them. People shoudl be able to plan there own future and save by themselves not the government stealing from them.

Yes, it needs to be ended and replaced with a system that is sustainable. This could be done over a period of 40 years. All we need to do is have leadership and courage to start the process.

Having a social safety net like SS is a good thing. It provides stability which is good for any society and is extremely beneficial to business, as volatility is always bad for business.

It does need to be reformed so that when it runs a surplus (like it has for generations) it can't be dipped into for other expenses.

Social Security needs to be reformed. As it stands now, as a 33 year old I very highly doubt SS will still be solvent in 30+ years when I would start to draw from it unless something is changed.

It is a Ponzi scheme because the surplus isn't going to the "investors," but the creator of the scheme (in this case, the government's general fund) which is entirely the point of the exercise.

It's something that can't be sustained as it is and eventually the govt is just going to raise the payroll tax or cut benefits for all seniors equally when means testing should be done and would also save more money than an across the board 10% cut.

Doing what bush advocated would be just as bad because it has to be with investments favored by the govt and because keeping your own money would still be illegal. One thing I dont like about Gary Johnson is that he was kind of establishment on this issue.

That said, Ive given up hope and I'm expecting that it will either become a fascist system or payroll taxes will go up in which case there won't be much of a point in working.

How does it encourage people to be lazy? The more you make the more you pay in and the more you get back when you are eligiable. When not messed with (Thanks Reagan), its basically a big savings account for retirement. Sure its not voluntary, but it is still a good thing.

Doing away with it would just have more people on welfare instead when they are old and without money. But now tax payers have to pick up the tab.

So explain to us how those who have been paying (along with their employers) into SS for the past 40 years are supposed to "get back" what they paid in when you allow the younger generation to opt out. Remember, almost all the money paid into SS by 60+ somethings has already been paid out.

Social Security only needs minor changes to make it sustainable indefinately.

One is to slightly raise the retirement to 69.5 for those under 50.

The other is raise/do away with the cap what income is taxed for FICA purposes.

SS should NOT be means tested like the republicans want to do and everyone should have to pay the % on all income no matter the income level. Republicans only want to means test so they can justify the rich only paying FICA taxes on income only up to ~$105k or whatever its currently set at.
