Behind your average Home Router (without WPS) - I would think XP is still just as safe as anything else for surfing the web as long as your browser is updated

Until there's a GDI+ or runtime vulnerability, and then you're screwed regardless. There is no safe way to browse the internet on a machine not receiving security updates, regardless of the browser.:|
