Those of you who are offended at a saying such as "Rap blows" really need to grow up. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, and an opinion that "rap blows" does not necessarily mean the individual in question is ignorant.
I've listened to all forms of rap with an open mind, and for most I have formed the opinion that it's crap. It has nothing to do with the color of my skin, or that I'm "...a spoiled white guy from the suburbs..." Most rap is crap to me simply because it is an assault on my eardrums. On some rare occasions, a song will come out with a good beat that I actually enjoy. I'd mention a few titles, but all of the "true rap fans" would get their panties all in a bunch about it, so I won't.
My personal preferences are for music that is actually created with real instruments, and I appreciate the real talent of the artists who compose it. I enjoy a song with good vocals, and appreciate the artist's singing skills, especially since it is a talent I lack. Rap music has neither of these qualities, hence my opinions of it. I also do not care for the lyrics of most rap music. To me, glorifying violence and "the thug's life", and occasionally spewing messages of hate, disqualifies it as art. It is also very difficult for me to respect an 'artist' who, even though he may be quite successful, still acts as if he's an adolescent hood living in the bad side of town.
I fail to see nearly all rap as art, and consequently have formed my opinions about it.
Call me ignorant, and I'll tell you to read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, by James Joice. It's poorly written, and filled with flaws in the central story, but it does give the best definition of art I've ever read. Read it, and then try to tell me that I am wrong.
Before anyone flames me, take the time to re-read my post and realize that regardless of my opinions, everyone else is free to feel differently. Just because "rap blows" to me doesn't mean you are not able to enjoy it and appreciate it as art.
