That's what I got from the gist of it too. I even PMed Isla before I saw this come up, somewhat denoting that.

let me start off by saying that SG is not indicative of all chinese peoples. please forgive my mental retarded country folk.

sorry, but can you tell me what a "cracker" is? i heard it used before in a derogatory sense but i have no idea who it refers to. i only ask this question for knowledge's sake and not because i am a racist.

Say it like it is, my Chinese brother. If you've never heard the term cracker, I take it you've not been in the US long? What about, "Sucky sucky, me love you long time?"

Come back to me when you bear scars or bruises of racism, punk.

yeah, i guess i won't bear scars of racism since i was born in this country. boy, ever thought maybe the racism that you encounter might be due to you being an ingonrant fool? i agree that sometimes people (all people) are idiots and feel that they are better than another, but you are just a whole other story. weird to see that you used a phrase that was spoken by a vietnamese person to make fun of a chinese person. in a way, you have lost all respect whatsoever from me. instead of generalizing some people, maybe you might want to open your eyes and see that everyone is different and unique.

sometimes people are afraid that they would disrespect a culture that they do not understand. all isla did was ask a question about what would be acceptable as a gift. you have taken it to a new level and started to generalize that blacks all speak in a certain manner.

in case you were too ignorant to see,

<< mental retarded country folk >>

was you. but i guess in a way you deserve no forgiveness. what you need is a nice dose of life. u seem to be a bit sheltered.

Isla, don't worry. they are your neighbors. you'll get more chances to visit them and since your daughter are friends with them, you will see more of them.

don't be so hyper-defensive dood.
calm your ass down.

not everyone is here to offend you. it is clear that isla was merely trying to become better acquainted w/ chinese culture because she knew that they family she was going to meet was strong to their background. had she wanted to offend you or anyone else...she wouldn't have given a damn and been as rude as she possibly could be.
smile and thank her...because it's people that her that give people like you and me a little leeway when it comes to cultural diffusion.

isla

i know the 'comment' wasn't meant to be a racist remark. but just as we see supergroove get offended by your attempt to be cordial (ironically), others will get offended by your unseemingly unbiased remark. nevertheless, i understand, somewhat.

[EDIT]

now that i've been typing and thinking a little bit...i've decided- screw anyone who takes offense to it. it's only a joke at best, if even that. they get mad about it...too bad!

SIDE NOTE

congrats on the success of the dinner!

Do you actually think I'm SO STUPID AS TO THINK THAT I WASN'T AWARE THAT YOU WERE MAKING FUN OF ME?! Re-read my last post. It has a defensive tone all together. I don't want your pity. You throwing around the term retard, clearly shows how SHELTERED YOU ARE!

My brother has severe epilepsy. Forced to attent Public Schools because my parents didn't make enough money(they must be country folk, huh?) teachers failed to recognize that it was epilepsy and not a mental handicap that made school difficult for him. Soon mail from the Special Olympics started pouring in.

Can you imagine your dad getting this sorta mail in regards to your sibling or even yourself? He was utterly outraged and clearly offended. He went back to talk to the teacher, but it was too late. The school had placed him in a special education class.

You insensitive prick.

you do not need to apologize for this bafoon. He is drinking his swill and feeling sorry for himself. To overcome his feelings of low self esteem,in his inebriated state,he thinks from behind his keyboard,he can become the "Bruce Lee" kung fu defender of all asian culture as he spews filthy statements of racism in a thread started bya friendly person who only wanted help to show honor and respect for an asoian neighbor.

forget it.

When you drink, you say stupid things. I hope he sees the foolishness of his attacks and retracts his raceist remarks. He is now embarrasing all asian members with this kind of low life drival.

Per your last pm, SG. sure, i will gladly.

I am glad that this forum is so open that people can ask questions about other cultures to further understand each other. i have a wide and colorful array of friends but we don't look at each other by the color of our skin. in a way, i have learned alot about other cultures but i will never truly experience fully all the other cultures.

In a way Isla, you and your neighbors are taking a step forward. I guess society might not be as doomed as we all percieve it to be. If you ever need tt know more about various chinese traditions, i would be delighted to help and if i ever need help on latino traditions, you would be the first person i ask.

Okay, so I started something. I'll end it eventually.

I'm sorry Isla.

Tripleshot,

I bore you and you anger me. Simple as that. Don't like what you see, stop replying. My signature represents both the fact that you are a bigot just like myself and that your response clearly goes against what I think an Elite member exemplifies. That is, a respectable person who doesn't bring themselves down to the narrow-minded fool's level.

BiggieN,

I have Black friends. I have Red friends. I have Yellow friends. I have white friends. Re-read this WHOLE thread. You strive for unity, this thread goes against racial unity.

SG, you attack other people, disrespect them, and make generalizations with no evidence. Then when Tripleshot lashes back at you, you decide he just insulted your brother. Nowhere in his post did Tripleshot even mention your brother. He probably doesn't even know about your brother. You get pissed off and call him insensitive. I feel sorry about your brother, but maybe you need to be a bit more sensitive about others?

Tripleshot didn't insult my brother.

BiggieN did by referring to mentally handicapped using the term "retard". He's the insensitive prick. Tripleshot and I got our shots out of the way.

SG has Pmed me and this is settled. Let this thread die a natural death and lets not have anymore racism attacks of any sort. It is the most destructive and repulsive of any behavior by anyone who practices it. This thread was not intended to engender that,in fact it was to do the oppisite. It had served its purpose hours ago.

Good night:)

We have worked it out as well. I apologize for my misuse and abuse of the word "retard". in no way do i use that term to mean learning disabled. I meant no offense. Please do not continue as there was no offense to be meant from all sides of this.

Oy, vey...

I had no intent of starting any fights... :(

First, not only are my neighbors actually Chinese born and raised they are also people whom I want to show the utmost respect for... They radiate the most warm and wonderful vibrations, I feel very lucky to be invited into their home! I look forward to many years of learning and sharing with them. I do speak a little more slowly with the wife because she does struggle a little with English and she is still learning. As brilliant as she is, learning a second language as an adult is not easy. I am happy to help her, and if I can learn how to cook like she does in exchange, I have made a good deal!

Second, for those who want to know what the term Cracker means:

The Florida settlers/cattle ranchers used whips to herd their cattle, and "Cracker" was what they called themselves. The cracking sound that the whip made gave them their name. It has more to do with what they DID than anything else. Every year the Florida State Fair has a village where people dress in costume and act out Florida's history. It is called "Cracker Country". Frankly, there should be a little Ybor City set up right beside it because Florida was settled by my ancestors, too, but I am not complaining. :) It would be "Cigar Country" and have a little Cuban Club, Italian Club, and Centro Asturiano. :D

I always thought that Cracker was a proper term denoting the heritage of the agricultural settlers of Florida and the Deep South. Of course, I may just be too close to it to see anything offensive.... It's just the way it is down here.

Of course, if anyone else can shine some light on the whole Cracker thing, please do. I asked Mr Isla and he sees absolutely nothing wrong with the term... it is something he is proud of. It is what they call themselves when they are refering to their unique heritage. I guess the only thing I can equate it with is that my grandmother was born and raised in Key West, which makes her a Conch. It's a unique part of my heritage, something I am very proud of!

Edit: I know that depending on your dialect, you can say one word in Spanish and it can mean different things to different people, depending on the kind of Spanish they are. Maybe this is the same thing?

Peace and Blessings~

I'll post this out of experience because I think I know something about being chinese since I am chinese.

Lets see. Dont bring flowers because most chinese people I know are practical so they may not find dead flowers to be very useful. For some reason, fruits make really good gifts, like a basket of oranges. My family always bring fruits over to people's houses when we have dinner at their places.

p.s. take off your shoes in their homes... you dont want to carry in bad energies and also dirty their carpet :p

Well, actually people from China is not that traditional anymore after all the cultural revolution and communist rule. I am from Taiwan, and my wife is an Indonesian Chinese, and I know many Chinese from China, Taiwan and South East Asia. Actually I find people from China the least traditional. (Not that there is anything wrong with that, that is just a fact I find) You wouldn't believe how traditional South East Asian chinese are, we had to follow so many traditions when we got married!! But two of my friends from China just go over to the city hall and get the marriage license...that's it!!

I really respect Isla for wanting to know other people's culture and show respect for other's belief. The world would be a much better place if there are more people like her. It doesn't matter if she gets it totally right, but I am sure her neighbor will really appreciate her for trying.

Just a few pointers for Isla, both black and white are bad color, so don't dress/bring something with those color. It is a definate no no to bring clock as a gift because clock sounds exactly like end of life or death. Red is a happy color for chinese, so dress in red or bring stuff wrap in red wrapping paper is great for new year.

I can also see younger Asian American here trying to fit in, and it is tough. Some asian american may not be happy that others treat them differently because of their cultural backgournd. But as long as everyone treat each other with respect, I don't see why there should be any arguement. All Isla tried to do is show respect, nothing else, and she should be commended for that.

I am from HK wana say sth about the black/white colour dressing.

Dressing partially in black/white is obviously fine, but just dont go in pure black or pure white, that is, from top all the way to bottom in such single colour.

Isla:

If you can learn to make dumplings properly, the visit was a high level success! From dumplings you can move to Chicken Paprikash. Oh, yummy!! (Not that I would eat any chicken....)

The term "cracker" is usually used to disparage the N. Florida, Southern Georgia farm folks. However, it is also used as a term of affection by many of the same people, just as certain terms are used by Blacks and Hispanics in a loving way towards their own. I've not encountered a "cracker" who is sensitive enough to be upset by being called a "cracker", however. :)

Did they serve plum or rice wine? Did you catch the brand and year?

A meal is usually a unifying experience. Seems to be the essence of Zen. The Arab-Israeli Peace talks should be held in a Chinese restaurant! :)

So, do you think you were more exotic to them than they were to you? :)
