The terms are basically interchangeable in the US. Native American is a broader term, often referring to Eskimoes & Araucanians as well- Anybody whose ancestors were in the Americas prior to the arrival of the Spanish.
Huh.
But American Indian comes from ol' Columbus, calling the Natives he met Indians 'cause he thought he was in, well, China.
It'd be like calling all African Americans, say, American Ethiopian. Sounds fucked if ya ask me.
