Uh, how so? There's no way to know you shot someone else's cockpit out. In PVP pretty much everyone scrams when their shields go down regardless.

I swear, the more you post the more I suspect you don't actually own this game and are just some sort of secret double agent troll or something. :hmm:

But nooooooo, I don't own the game and have no idea what I'm talking about because you can't imagine how I can know another pilot's cockpit is broken. 🙄
 
Well I just decided to get the game. It's downloading now. I've been wishy washy about it but after reading some more reviews and watching some vids I decided to pull the trigger. I'm a fan of the genre so I hope I like it.
I also purchased one of these from Amazon. It should be here tomorrow. Hopefully it works well for both ED and Star Citizen(I'm a backer for SC too).

I'm getting the hang of trading finally. I shoulda done bounties to start out, but I'm finally in a mostly outfitted hauler and have found some decent trading routes. Though just before calling it a night I was talking to my wife while leaving a station and instead of retracting my landing gear I dumped all 140k worth of cargo into the station. lol

I have enough to buy more cargo but that kinda sucked.

I just got the game yesterday myself. I have that same HOTAS but I've only used KB+M (and TrackIR) so far in Elite: Dangerous. I'm going to try out some different key bindings but so far I've liked KB+M (I've only done a few training missions and about 20 minutes of "real" game time, basically flying around lost/clueless anyway lol).

I haven't played enough of the game to say I'm digging it, but I think the potential is there for me to really enjoy it. Man the complexity and depth to the game is pretty incredible if you think about it, and it should only get more so.

I'm terrible at combat; I had to play the first combat mission (the one after shooting the stationary toxic waste) where you're only up against a single spacecraft about 5-6 times before I finally beat him, lol. It just took me a while to get a handle on maneuvering, and I'm still terrible at it. The guy (and two ships, in the next training mission) end up getting behind me and I just could not get back behind them for the life of me. Didn't matter what keys I press or directions I tried to fly. I'm kinda surprised it only took me one try to beat the training mission where you fight two Fed ships (I think it's the 3rd mission), but having the missiles REALLY helped I'm sure.

There's still quite a few questions I have on the game but I don't feel like listing them all here with a long ass post. Gonna play for a bit and see if I can figure some more stuff out.

I picked up this (200$ on amazon). I am so freaking stoked. My only complaint is that the throttle was very very stiff even on the lowest setting for the first two days. I think I worked through the grease though and it's getting better everyday.

I normally spend a bit on my games though, its my main hobby. Now I am thinking of buying a custom desk so I can actually position these at knee level instead of using my wife's end table's 😛

What's the word on Star Citizen? I am kind of upset I wasn't able to be a backer for ED but I only just recently heard of it. Star Citizen I heard about awhile ago, but after ED I am definatley going to back it. This type of genre has my name written all over it.

Also any combat tips for noobs would be appreciated, I am very bad at PvP 😛

Um, go slower than you think you need to and stay behind them. :awe:
Use lasers to kill the shields, cannon-types are for the hull. I prefer gimbaled, but they do slightly less damage. Boost seems to make you maneuver better, but I think it's the fact that you're moving more distance. Time for that distance is much better though. Keep a half-pip on shields (if you play like I do) so your shield layers passively regen a little.

Saitek X-55 is a surprisingly good stick for the $; I picked up mine a while ago for like $160 used from Amazon, which I consider an awesome steal. You said lowest setting, but to double check, you can swap out springs to adjust resistance.

I've emptied both of my gimballed lvl 1 autocannons and don't think it was more than $5k for the refill; might have been less. They kill in far less time than lasers, well worth the trade.
 
I got into some PVP last night by Tench. A bunch of yahoos were attacking traders so I went after them in my Clipper. This thing quickly melts vipers and cobras but the PVP is still really glitchy. As I was dogfighting, all of the sudden with no visual indication, I go from full strength to shields down and 40% hull. Now my Clipper only had class 4 shields so I wasn't expecting to be able to tank much, but having no warning like that must be due to lag or connection issues and makes PVP completely pointless and stupid. Unless you are in a cheap ship and have no fear of dying at all. While I scared off a couple pirates, the damage I took to my clipper cost almost 500,000 to repair so obviously I came off worse for wear.

That doesn't happen very often at all. Are you sure you didn't collide with anyone?

I mean, oh man, something rare just happened. This WHOLE GAME IS POINTLESS AND STUPID.

Don't be mad, bro. You can make that up pretty easily in your clipper.

This has happened to me twice in two days. The problem is either that the Clipper's stats are bugged or it is lag due to the area being so crowded. And I said this issue makes PVP in an expensive ship or in crowded areas pointless and stupid, not the whole game. Stop being a whiny troll.

There is definitely a learning curve with this game. It took me about 5 hours to get most of the common things down like navigation, landing, dropping from FTL speed to supercruise then to regular speed, trading, ect.
I still don't have a good grasp on all of it but it's getting better.

Don't feel bad I suck at combat too.😀 It just takes practice. I spent most of the after noon re-training myself to use the HOTAS. I never should have started with a KB+mouse and then try to switch but I was impatient. Now that I got the HOTAS down I love it.

That is great advice for n00bs like me. At first I went in full throttle but that's not how this game works. I found out if I keep my speed in between the blue bars to the left of my current speed I can maneuver so much better.
It made it a crap load easier to target ships.


So far I'm really enjoying this game. I've got about 15k credits to my name, got my own ship and take jobs when I need them. The rest of the time I'm exploring the Milky Way one star at a time.

I'm livin the dream guys..livin the dream and I LOVE it. hehe🙂
 
I'm not understanding piracy as a viable profession. I shoot at transports and they just fight my viper until death, I guess I need to pop cargo things?

I such at combat but can handle most npcs... I guess I'll just stick with bounty hunting. Mining is sort of fun...maybe I'll save up and get a good mining rig. I haven't even touched trading yet...bah. dunno

The way to make money as a pirate is to start at an anarchy system star port and accept missions which ask to provide stolen goods. Then go to a nav beacon and cargo scan ships until you find one with that cargo. Take out their shields, then use a hatch-breaker limpet to get the goodies inside. Return to station for large payout.
 
You can also shoot the cargo hatch subsystem to have the target spit out cargo. I do this while bounty hunting to get a lil' extra $$$.

So you really like the HOTAS over keyboard and mouse? I'd really rather not switch cause I usually keep my joystick put away and I like all the keys at my fingertips when using the KB+M (they're still there if you have a joystick but you can't get to them as fast). But I may give it a shot at least.

I rebound some keys from the default. I moved throttle to mousewheel up/down and set it to 10% increments instead of continuous. I also changed mouse X-axis to yaw instead of roll and set roll to Q/E. I moved thrust up/down to W/S as well, and instead of just J for FSD I set hyperspace to R and supercruise to F. I like this setup WAY better and find maneuvering my ship much, much easier (though I am also just getting the hang of it more).

For missions I took a bounty one and some other delivery one or something, but for the latter I kept getting refused docking at the place so I just aborted the mission. The bounty one I couldn't find any ships to shoot where I was and it was getting late so I just aborted that too. I'll have to try again; I'm definitely liking the game.
