Well I have to decide like, real soon, where to apply. I have a list of 12 schools. I can apply to 6 max. UCLA and Berkeley only count as one.

1. U. of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign
2. University of Virginia [Early Decision]
3. Virginia Tech [Early Action]
4. UCLA
5. U.C. Berkeley
6. Princeton Univ.
7. Penn State - Univ. Park
8. U. Michigan - Ann Arbor
9. Northwestern Univ [Dad went there]
10. U. Southern California
11. N.C. State U. - Raleigh
12. Carnegie Mellon Univ.

Things to know:
- Applying as Comp. Engineering Major
- SAT V 650 M 780
- GPA 3.53, Junior-year 3.93
- Don't want "pure engineering" school (variety)
- Don't want engineering at bottom of school priorities
- I Live in Virginia

Northwestern should be considered a shoe in for you. Excellent grades and you dad is an alum. What kinds of activies do you have? They help alot.

take out Carnegie, USC, and probably U Michigan and Princeton.

meanwhile, it seems like you want to goto Us within Virignia?

IMO, you should go out and see some other places.
 
I just notice that MIT is not on the list. Its a great school and you are right near Boston. The campus is right near the Esplanade on the Charles River which is beautful.

UVA should be tops on your list, as it is both inexpensive (Since you are instate) and well rated.

Princeton is well balanced, but very pricey. Apply though if you like the school.

Berkely is ridiculously crowded. I'd say grad school there would be tops, but ugrad is atrocious. Don't bother applying there.

CMU is great... if(you're a hard core CS/Engin person){} else{forget it;}

Thats my advice. Definitely keep UVA and Princeton. Definitely ditch Berkely and CMU.
 
I'd say definitly apply to U of I at Champaign-Urbana. Currently my sister goes there. She showed me the engineering campus, and various computing buildings, very impressive. She also showed me the curriculum for a computer science/engineering major. She said its one of the top schools for computers and engineering, so I don't think you can go wrong there.
 
MIT is great variety and an excellent CS program. Like Andy said they are one oft the top Business Schools. Give it a shot, the worst the can say is "No" and you are not in any danger of ending up at Blaine's Beauty Academy as a desperation choice.

Because I'm not filling out anymore forms than that, writing more essays than that, and moreover my counselor isn't going to write all those recommendations! 6 is a good number.
 
University of Illinois - Where else can you get such a healthy does of engineering and agriculture majors?

Illinois definitely has a very diverse student body. It's also very difficult to get into as a for being a state school.
 
USC...not just for the engineering, either. Get the hell out of Virgina and experience life. Moving to an urban environment is beneficial, you experience a diversity, adventure, and the entertainment options can't be beat.
 
Why are you considering UCLA and Berkeley one?

UCLA. Get out of the East Coast and come here. If you want the big school feel and none of the weirdos up at Berkeley. One of the top public schools in the nation. Plus, unlike the private schools, you can apply for residency for tuition purposes and get a MUCH cheaper tuition bill than at the big privates. Only thing is your GPA might hurt you. Average GPA of my entering class was rougly 4.175.
 
hehe, if you want to apply for residency in California, you better start hunting for good lawyers! I have heard many, many horror stories about the beauracratic system here in CA, don't count cheap tuition in as a plus for California schools just yet. However, even with the extra out of state tuition, the Universities of California is still worth your buck. Plus, it's California! 😛 🙂
 
that acura integra you're neffing in won't cut it at UVA. you have to have at least a BMW to go there. check, its an admission requirement.

oh yeah, and theres really hot chicks here at UT. i know some hot chicks at penn state, but texas is way hotter. and they're friendly too. plus we have one of the best AI labs in the country. damn good EE too.
