<<USC...not just for the engineering, either. Get the hell out of Virgina and experience life. Moving to an urban environment is beneficial, you experience a diversity, adventure, and the entertainment options can't be beat. >>

Adventure as in dodging bullets and running away from gang members? :)

I don't think UCLA is a very good engineering school. That's the general impression I get.

Berkeley is pretty much good at everything except looking clean, smelling acceptable, and keeping sane.

If you live in Virginia maybe you should try U of V. It's reputed to be one of the best public schools in the nation.

i'd go with uva. or vatech if vick decides to stay another year ;)

how about georgia tech? we have an engligh program. sort of. <extreme sarcasm> but we have a top notch management school :) </extreme sarcasm>

but seriously why don't you want to go to a purely engineering school (aside from the pathetic babe ratios)? in all likelyhood that's where you'll get the best education for what you want to do.

MIT here.

Windogg and andylawcc are right. Sloan is a top notch business shcool.
Ness, if you have any questions about MIT, PM me anytime.

BTW, you may not necessarily have to write 6 different apps. Any of the schools on your
list use the common app?

There is such a thing called Common App, but it's generally for the "not-so-good" schools...
I am sure it's better to send their own version of the app, at least it shows more sincerity.

meanwhile, UCLA and UCB counts as one coz all UCs only need one App..
and I would definitely pick MIT out of all 12 IF my grades are good enough..

You should definitely consider the University of Illinois. Great engineering and CS programs, wonderful facilities, diverse campus life and lots of extra-curricular activities available. Just my .02 :)

The Electrical and Computer Engineering department at CMU is top-notch, but it is very competetive. ECE and CS are probably the two hardest majors there and they're both among the top programs in the country. Some of the smartest people I have ever met in my life were ECE majors there. Also, CMU is known primarily as an engineering school, so it's not usually a low priority for anything.

It's definitely one of the most unique places I've ever been to. There are so many "unique" types of people that everyone fits in somewhere. It's really odd to see hardcore CS geeks and drama majors next to each other.

As far as social life goes... That's probably what I would consider the main drawback. People there tend to stay in cliques a lot. It might have improved since I left though.

If you're serious about computer engineering, then I would pick Berkeley, NC State, U-Illinois, and CMU.

Andylawcc, just curious as to why you said to take U of M off the list. In 1999, Newsweek ranked it in the top 3 schools for engineering in the country, although I can't remember if it was 1,2, or 3. I just remember it was one of those because I was also considering going there, but I chose Michigan State University and I couldn't be happier. If you do go to visit U of M come check out MSU, too. I have a cousin that goes to U of M and there campus is nothing like States, and MSU has a nice engineering program too.

I'd tell you to check out RPI, but since there's been talk of women, I guess you wouldn't be interested. :) Hey, if there was a contest to see who's ladies could grow the biggest beards I think we might win.

Anyways, I had a 3.85 and a 1480 SAT (680v/800m) plus 800 math2c 790 physics satII's, I didn't get into to MIT. My opinion, save your $55 or whatever it is now.

the joke about CMU is that there are only two majors there: asian and gay. sorry if this offends anyone, but well, lighten up.

I vote UCLA. Granted, I'm biased, after having gone to school here for several years. I don't know what you're talking about DiRF, but UCLA's engineering program is second only to Berkeley's in the UC system, and I know it's rated high nationally.

USC does not have a good program, so if you're amped about coming to California, come to UCLA. It's a more social campus than Berkeley, and the girls, my god absolutely no contest between here and Berkeley. What passes for a hot girl up there is marginal at best here. The weather is nice, campus is beautiful. Granted it is a bit large, and slightly impersonal, but if you join a house, it definitely makes campus smaller.

I wouldn't trade my time here for anything else.

late.

The reason I said UCLA and Berkeley count as one school, is because the application is for all U. California schools. So might as well apply!

BTW, my GPA is 3.53, but my junior year was a 3.93, and that was with 2 AP and 2 GT classes. Also, my grading scale is more difficult than the national standard, enough to lower my GPA about .3 to .4

I don't hang here often but for important decisions like this... What type of environment are you looking for with respect to setting (Big City/Small Town), weather, gender ratio, study/party ethics, job objectives...

NC State IS a quality school, no matter how much they pale in comparison with Duke. :D They are one of the top engineering schools in the nation, and Anand goes there! What more could you want for computer science?

*Edit*

Let me also mention that Raleigh is only a few hours away from VA, NC State has one of the widest varieties of courses out of any state school, and it has ACC basketball!! wOOt!!

3.9 down about .3 or .4 is about 4.2 or 4.3 can't do that on a 4.0. Plus everyone even looking at these kind of schools is all about AP classes, so you have to figure that in there. I was in state too, and my cousin got in from NJ and he had worse scores. So take that for what's it's worth. :)
